I bought a Sony Alpha in December with the kit lens and have been travelling around Europe with it since. I'm new to photography and am starting to take some semi-decent shots, but would like to go to the next step. I am planning to buy a little tripod, a polarising filter, ND and ND Grad and a new lens (maybe two if I can afford it!). But which one??? I have no idea!!! It's for travel photography so it is a mix of lanscapes, portraits, buildings and objects. I have the kit 18-70mm lens. I can find websites to compare lenses, but I don't understand enough about what I am looking for for these sites to be useful. Can you help? And is there anything else I need to kit myself out with for good shots?
Thanks!

I'm going to be really unoriginal and suggets the Sigma 10-20mm. The 18-70 should have enough reach for most of the thing's you've described, so why not go ultra-wide? Great for landscapes and buildings.

If you do go down this route it might be a good idea to look at something like the Cokin P filter system for your polarising and ND filters, that way you could use the same filters with both lenses (Cokin do a 'wideangle' verison of the filter holder which cuts out almost all the vignetting the normal holder can cause with the 10-20).

The equivalent for the Alpha is the Minolta 50mm 1.7 - You can still pick these up for about £50 but they get snapped up quickly. If you look on ebay, search for the old film cameras that come with the lens attached for less than the cost of the lens alone.

A good cheap zoom is the Minolta 70-210mm F4. Very sharp, lovely lens F4 throughout for £100-150, it is normally known as the beercan.

The Sigma 28-70 2.8 is a fantastic lens if you are looking to replace your kit lens with something sharper and faster.

This is a great hand for second hand minolta gear
