So this weekend we have been away for a mini zoo tour and yesterday my Nikon 70-300 started doing this weird juddering thing when I zoomed into about 200mm. I had not tried to focus or anything - but the lens juddered a bit then stopped and worked ok. Has been doing it sporadically, for longer periods of time and at various focal lengths ever since. Definitely got worse over the course of today. Manual focus is fine - and I have just tried a number of other lenses on the body and they all seem good - so I am assuming this is a problem with the lens?

Little bit sad as this lens has served me well - but I'm guessing it won't be worth getting it fixed? Replacement or upgrade a better idea?

I have the same lens, but have serious GAS for the 70-200 2.8 and 1.4 convertor as I dont think I need much more length.
Maybe worth cleaning the pins if you havnt already.
Was it the same with VR off ?

Yes - turning the VR off made no difference. I'll confess I don't know how to clean the pins - but I will look it up and give it a go. Thank you.

White spirit or lighter fluid on kitchen paper or similar - although I think its probably straw grasping tbh.....

I think you're probably right... won't hurt to try though.
