I think John Lewis have been topped this year....

Not seen the ad yet but have bought a couple of the chocolate bars.

I like chocolate!

I see all of the victor meldrew types have been complaining about this.

Raising money for the British Legion. Who can honestly say that is a bad thing ffs.

Exactly. They made it in partnership with the RBL, who theyve worked with for 20 years, but still people complain...jeez!

Im not sure people always seem to hate the fact that companies make a profit.

I would imagine that many people on here rely on companies like Sainsbury to make a profit as their shares would form a part, directly or indirectly, of their pensions.

They also pays hundreds of millions in corporation and other taxes.

Wonder if those critical of Sainsbury then buy grey imports.

Were Universal Pictures wrong to profit from the Holocaust when they made Schindler's List?

..insert any other company and film made to represent any historical human suffering.

Schindler's List has taught more people about the Holocaust than all the other films & documentaries put together - it can hardly be compared to a TV advert. Before it was made Spielberg told the money men that they'd lose all their money - they still went ahead.

Schindlers list made a lot of money! I wonder if any of the profits went to the Royal British Legion.

Why would the profits go to the British Legion? Schindler's List paid for a whole host of educational organisations relating to the Holocaust.

Exactly! The Sainsburys advert will benefit the British legion greatly, yet folks complain because sainsburys make a profit off the back of an advert about the war, but no-one complains if Schindlers list made a profit, which is the point Phil was making, he was not directly comparing a tv advert to a film.

Yes...because Spielberg is known for making movies that make a loss.

It can be directly compared to a TV advert. Two commercial entities exploiting the suffering of millions. That's the bottom line, regardless of charitable donations and educational effects. The use of Schindler's List was purely because it was the first that came to mind. It could be any war film, and there are literally thousands of them.. all made to seek a profit.

Just for the record - I loved the advert. Just like I loved Schindler's List.

The point is that if Sainsbury wanted to give money to the British Legion they could have done so just by handing over all the profit from Christmas chocolate sales - it didn't actually need an advert at all. If the Legion are happy with it though then fair enough - the more £££s the BL gets the better.

As for Schindler's List - Spielberg's intention was to tell the story to as wide an audience as possible in the hope that the human race would learn from it, he didn't set out to make money from the film (hence the bit in post 49, which is true). The only reason it ended up being so profitable is that it's a masterpiece. I saw it when it first came out 21 years ago and I've never seen anything else have such a massive effect on an audience - not even close.

As for Schindler's List, it was an example. Saving Private Ryan. Band of Brothers. Black Hawk Down... explain away all those?

I'm sure that just like Spielberg the creative team behind the Sainsbury's ad set out to tell the story too, but as I've said.. the bottom line is that was it done for profit.

It's simple the way I look at it.

Has it done bad or has it done good?

What I mean is make a list of the bad things that have come out of this advert.

Now make a list of the good things that have come out of it.

Does the bad outweigh the good? If so it was a bad move.

Does the good outweigh the bad? If so it was a good move.

Never mind about what else they might have done which would have been better. They did this. So did it result in some good or some bad.

So let's see your lists.

This is the one that gets me. The most anticipated Christmas ad in Spain is for the Christmas lottery, el Gordo. Subtitles for those that need them.

I really can't believe people are whinging about this - pathetic !

1) Advert is thought provoking and has highlighted the madness of trench war.

2) it has highlighted peace at Christmas.

3) The advert commemorates 100 years since 1914.

4) the Royal British Legion has received a significant donation which it uses to support serving members of HM Forces leaving due to injury etc and our veterans.

These are all positives, there are no negatives ! These are things that matter, anything else is superfluous.
