Hi,
I currently work as a security officer and due to work being of low amounts I have been reduced in shifts.

The bosses did this last week and told me on Wednesday It would be my last shift till Tues.

Im not too concerened about it but my girlfriend came over on Thurs and I spent till sat with her only to return home and find a message off my boss requesting me to call him, which I did.

He stated "Its took you this ********* long to call me back!" (he left message fri 13.00 I called him Sat 13.00)

He then said "I wanted you to do a shift for me" I explained that my girlfriend had come aver and I was spending time with her but he said it wasnt good enough and I should have had my work phone on.

My question is.....
Is it right for him to threaten discipline on me just because I dont have my work phone on, on my days off???

Please if you can shed some light on this.

Thanks
Phil

I'm guessing that it will probably depend on the contract you signed.

I'd tell him to get stuffed.
Especially as he's previously told you that you were off until next Tuesday. When you're off work it's YOUR time NOT HIS.

If it is a work phone, and is supplied by him to you. Then I would look and see what your contract says.

if you dont have a contract with him as a security officer he can just get rid of you or not give you work at all that is just the security industry for you

i worked the doors for many years and had to be so careful i always took extra work on but with the way things are just be careful security bosses are buggers

If there's no contract in place neither you nor him are bound by any terms other than the standard employment law. This means he can try and treat you, within reason, any way he wants and it's up to you to decide what you're willing to tolerate.
If keeping your work phone on when you've been given a day off isn't acceptable for you then either have a word to try and resolve the problem if you think he may be accommodating, if not then maybe working for him isn't for you.
Having a contract of employment is always advisable to avoid situations such as this.

I HAVE A CONTRACT!
BUT
It says nothing about a work phone in it.

Which brings me back to the first point can he dictate to me that I must have it turned on during my days off.

I dont think he can maybe a visit to CAB may help:thumbs:

Of course he can't. As far as I know slavery was abolished 200 odd years ago. It's a job not your life. And if he threatens to sack you... tell him you'll buy him a drink after the tribunal... he'll need it!

cheers

Tell him you'd be quite happy to have your phone on whilst you're off duty.......providing he pays you an on-call allowance!!

we dont have a land line in the house , all the family use mobiles, my boss keeps telling me ive got to give him my number ,,,i keep telling him to F off,,,,,works for me anyway

No...even in the Army where we're theoretically paid 24-7 and on-call at all times they don't do this...
During a normal work cycle, i.e Mon-Fri, I have my work moby on me at all times.
At weekends, it's on but won't be on me and I may take a while to read and/or respond to any messages.
If I'm on leave which has been previously signed-off on by my Boss then the work Moby is switched off and left in my desk drawer.

My own moby I answer only if I feel like it, so if a 'Number Witheld' comes up, I don't answer it - most calls from Military lines come up like this, so it's usually coming from Work.
