This is rather embarrassing for me, but I'm sure (like 99%) very recently I noticed from the properties tab on each of my jpeg file photo's, that the summary information included the distance from camera to subject

It's not so much I need that information, but as it's not there anymore it's making me think I imagined it?

Can anyone please help, as this is driving me nuts, hence why I had to ask this question :bang:

Chris.

Exif does sometimes contain the distance, but I'm not too sure what you have to do to record it (as I never really paid attention to it). :)

It turns up with some body/lens combinations, but not all. I can't remember off the top of my head which combination I've seen it with. To be honest, it never interested me enough to pay attention. I'm also uncertain how the camera knows the distance to subject (rather than the distance to the focal plane) :suspect:

Not all lenses report the focusing distance. I believe the figures are also a bit approximate, even though they're sometimes stated in fine increments. Distance data at close range is used as a key part of flash exposure metering.

Many thanks to Andy, Oskar, Alastair, and Richard for reassuring me I'm not cracking up

After reading your reply Alastair I suddenly had a brain-wave, I thought it might have been from a friends photo's I have on my PC, but still nothing showing. I then thought it might have been from my Wife's camera, but still nothing. I then checked photo's I'd taken with all the lenses I have, but still nothing.

So I'm not sure exactly what has happened here. If I do find out (as Arnie said ;) ) "I'll be back"

Many thanks for your replies, I feel a lot better now

Just had a look at my jpg's and there is a subject distance tag but no distance given. Whether it ever said different to that I don't know.

Andy, Out of interest did you see the "subject distance" tag as in this information below, although obviously it's not showing here as it's one of mine?

I would show you but don't know how to copy/capture and paste the info here, but all I do is right click on the image and select properties. Subject distance is listed under the details tag in the camera section. On my system the properties box has four headings, General, Security, Details, and Previous Versions. Hope that makes sense, and I'm running under Windows 7.

No worries Andy. I don't think it's going to make any difference if you did post up your findings anyway, from what you're saying. Thanks for getting back to me  I'm running Windows XP.

If I find out anymore I'll let you know.

I've just had a look in the details tab for the photo properties on my drive and there is a 'subject distance' tag between the 'metering mode' tag and the 'flash mode' tag in the part headed 'camera'. The only problem with that is there is no info ever listed for the 'subject distance', it's always blank. The only other info like it is a tag for '35mm Focal Length' listed with the details from my bridge and P&S cameras but it's not listed in any of the photos from my dslr's.

Stuart, thanks for having a look. Your mention of a P&S camera reminded me I'd not checked any photo's from mine, as it's not one I use very often, but still nothing showing.

I do get Subject Distance on my 7D when I have my 70-300L attached but I don't take any notice of it. The first time I spotted it was when taking a picture of the moon (with a 1.4x attached) it said it was 4,294,967 KM away. I don't think so!

WilliamC, thanks for your input. I like the bit about the moon
