Yes
I woke up this morning to nice sunshine ( yesterday it poured down all day) and thought I'd have a visit along the Severn Valley Railway line doing some photography of their Diesel gala . I spent about 4 hours in the sunshine at various vantage points and got what I thought were some great photos, I even managed to take one of my dogs with me ! I came home popped the SD card in the computer which immediately crashed. The thing refused to reboot so my only option was to reinstall the operating system which I did straight onto the SD card and trashed all my photos ! :(:(:(. It just goes to show what can be achieved if your stupid enough !

b****r!

All may not be lost:

Oh dear that is never good - sorry for your loss :)

Sounds like on that day you fall into my category " Numpty " The difference is I am allways a numpty :)

Oh I didn't think of that !

I have thought about using a photo recovery program but as yet haven't got around to it.

How did you manage to install the OS onto a SD card, I presume this is a windows thing as I cannot see how anyone can do that on a Mac.

It's a Linux thing - windows and osx are too limited to do such a thing readily. Linux will happily run off a usb stick, and never touch your HDD.

ah, I see, but I would not say OS X is limited in installing an OS onto a drive, it's pretty simple really as you can see the actual drive in the installation window and it prompts you to ask if you are sure as the drive will be wiped.

It probably did ask me somewhere down the line but as I had, had to install a really old version of Ubuntu ( the more recent copy of Mate didn't work after multiple goes ) then download Lubuntu burn the disk then reboot to load the new operating system all I felt like doing was setting fire to it or smashing it up with a big hammer :):), I hadn't looked/ realized I still had the memory card in. I used to like messing with computers but now I'm not very keen at all so this made the fact that I had wasted the morning even worse as now I had wasted a few hours on top. As far as I can remember my first Linux crash, I had just used Bleachbit to wipe my free space and think that had killed it !
I've just tried using photorec but can only find the few files that I have taken since so I think they are really lost. Not the end of the World though !

I have in the past run Linux from an SD card for a good while when I was given a desk top with no HDD.

I usually install the LTS version of Ubuntu MATE. If 20.04 doesn't work, then 18.04 (which has ~18 months of support left, so it will still get updates).
