Should I get one now?

Should I wait until the start of next motorsport season to get one?

Should I wait longer than that?

Thanks
Matt

Personally Matt, i would get one now. It will give you time to get it the way you want it, before adding too many pictures. You dont have to make it "live" straight away. You will be able to preview it at your lesiure.
Go for it mate.
Dean:)

Right I will then!!

Go for it now...... plenty of time to sort out the inevitable niggles before you really need it 100% right.

Cheers,

Neil

:agree:

I can highly recommend www.siteground.com. Cheap as chips with masses of disk space - 750 Gigabytes. Lots of installable software including photo galleries

RIght ok, give me some webisite holders. 123-reg, are they ok?

I use them for my domain registration but they don't seem too good (price wise at least) for hosting.

Haven't tried them personally.... but have heard LOTS of negative.

Cheap is not best - definitely.

If you do a search on here you'll find loads of recommendations.

Mind it's not just the price and extras but more importantly how reliable their uptime is and also how quick their service is. If your target audience is the UK I'd stick to a UK based hosting company, although I've experienced some which are horribly slow even for the most basic website.

I've found UKHost4u to be very reliable, good backend control panel and also very fast connection. Not the cheapest but they are based in fife and also have some big operations or server thingy in Docklands so speed is always good.

I built one for the Chinese wedding of my son and his wife. The hard bits are to get used to the interface and organise the galleries into some sort of structure. I used clikpic and bought a year's subscription. It's about to expire but if if you have a quick look at www.zhanghartchinawedding.com then you'll get some idea of what you can do without any outside help.

Very good points, however Siteground that I recommended is US based and they were recommended by a friend who has used them for years and currently has something like 6GB of photos on his site. He says that he has never had any issues with them.

Whilst I understand the attraction of a UK based host I find that US companies - all kinds - tend to provide very high levels of service because US customers demand it whereas we, as a nation, tend to be obsessed with prices and the quality tends to reflect that. The fact that US hosts seem - are - dirt cheap to us you must bear in mind that prices in the US are generally lower than in the UK, look at the price of software etc. Remember the old rule of thumb, what costs a dollar in the US costs a pound over here.

I know I'm a little off topic here, but there seems to be something serious going on with your noise reduction and sharpening filters :suspect:

That was last year when I had noise paranoia and I hit everything with NoiseWare. There was lots of atmosphere in China, I could post some examples of the pollution's impact on the images. I was also aggressive in my use of the unsharp mask. If I could unsharp the unsharp mask I would, but I don't know how. I would post prod them differently now.

Those images will drop out of sight as the year's subscription ends next month. clikpic worked for me in terms of organising and displaying the images and it was relatively easy to do so.

my domain name is registered through freeparking.co.uk, which ive had no problem for 4 years now. previously i had a domain name registered through a hosting company i was using, when i attempted to move to another (more reliable) host i had a real whohar moving it and ended up loosing the domain.

If all you need is an online gallery and domain name, you could do worse by:

Domain Name: www.namecheap.com
Online Gallery: ZenFolio - www.zenfolio.com

If you choose Zenfolio, drop me a PM and I can get you a 20% off discount code.

If you want to see what Zenfolio looks like, check my sig.

www.fuzioned.com

never had any bother and there quite cheap..quick for help too if you get stuck..

I've used Dataflame for years.

Have you thought about what sort of site you are going to have? Is it something that can be built/tweaked without it needing to be on a server? (I am building a site in XHTML with Flash galleries and can build/test that on my laptop, but something like coppermine would need php/mysql, which you should also make sure the host has if you need it)

I am going to with vidahost.

IS the beginner pakage ok for uploading upwards of 500 pictures a weekend? THey will be at forum size. Will that pakaage be able to withstand it?

my maths head is gone..

size of picture x how many pictures x how many times looked at and thats your bandwidth used.

I use the QIQ Premium Package at £19.99, with 10,000MB webspace and 100,000MB monthly bandwidth. UK domain names are an extra £9.95 for 2 years. The only trouble I've had with them was when I forgot to renew on time and they took my site down, then sent a reminder to the email account I could no longer access. D'oh! Site was back up very quickly once I paid though :)

My only concern with the Vidahost starter package is the 500MB webspace, my gallery is nearly 1000MB alone. I'm a few years ahead of you in numbers of photos so it won't be an issue for a while, but I know how fast you churn out new shots ;)

Most webhosts let you upgrade as and when required.. just make sure that's the case. You won't mind paying more if you are using it rather than paying for something your not getting the benefit of :)

Will look into them, thank you :D
