I'm thinking maybe it's time to upgrade from my Sony A200

Here are my requirements:

I have a body-only budget of £1000. I can add lenses incrementally

I'm not bothered about live-view or movie mode. Edit: Or pop-up flash

I am bothered about pin-sharp, faithfully-reproduced images; high ISO performance; great build-quality; good selection of lenses

What would you recommend? :)

Any of those three would do the job nicely. You may as well try the A700 too, as that's well within your budget.

Off to Jessops with you now to try the different cameras out and see which one feels "right" ;)

I'm not familiar with Nikon but from the Canon range I'd go for a 5D (I've got one!) The full frame is fab, excellent colour reproducability and ISO that still works a treat at 1600. Not the fastest to focus which is about the only weakness.

The A700 is a definite contender, as I already have a couple of Sony-fit lenses

I used to go to school with one of the salesman at my local Jessops, so I'll see if I can squeeze him a bit. Not literally, you understand....;)

They seem to be about £1200+, body only

A tad above my budget :(

The A700 seems to be around £560 at the mo, that would leave plenty of spare cash for more glass ;)

You need to consider whether you want to stay with the Sony system or move onto Nikon or Canon though - all have their plusses and minuses...

The Mk1 is available from about £700 second hand. I'd recommend MPB, I've bought from Matt before and he's a good guy.

Whatever you choose, I hope you enjoy it :)

I do like the way the controls on my A200 are set out. Very intuitive

I'm just wondering if the A700 is that much better

And then, of course, there's the snob value of owning a Canon.......:whistling:
