Sorry if this is in the incorrect area not sure where to put it.
Basically I need a good book or two to get me started with all this malarky - I've never owned an SLR full stop before and just bought myself a Sony A200 and am a bit overwhelmed by all the stuff! I'm really keen to learn so hopefully some peeps can recommend some good learning materials.

Ideally, I would like somewhere I can pay via paypal (ebay??) since I've recently had an ebay firesale and all my 'camera fund' money is sitting in my PP account, and I detest the 5-day withdrawal time :bang:

TIA

Tim

I'm gonna be the first to recommend Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson!

It really is a good book and is recommended by lots of members on here.

If you'd like a book on composition as well as exposure, then IMHO, the Photographer's Eye by Michael Freeman and Mastering Composition by Chris Rutter are hard to beat!

Look around local colleges for beginers courses , just started mine 2 weeks ago.

It just has to be understanding exposure. Its the only photography book that made sense to me.
It just all seems to fall into place. The result being that I have shot manual since reading it.
I still like to return to it every now and then. Just to top up.;)

Try Scott Kelby's The Dogoital Photography Book. Loads of simple advice that can make a difference.

there is a copy of understanding exposure available to loan in the talk equipment section

cheers guys, what I'm going to do is buy understanding exposure now and then tell the missus to get me either Photographer's Eye by Michael Freeman or Mastering Composition by Chris Rutter

Now I've got to decide whether to pay £12 from ebay or wait 5 days and pay £8 from amazon...

bookwyse..thankyou for the offer but I'm eager to get reading asap and I think someone has it atm, very nice of you to loan out your book though :)

I'm a noob and I found that Understanding Exposure + the camera manual (yes I actually had to read the manual!) was enough to get me started.

I got the 30D field guide which was a bit useful as well, but not as good as the manual cause it assumed I wasn't a total idiot and confused me at first.

I really need to work on myt composition!

And your typing !

Understanding Exposure is an "essential guide" really - I've been messing around with cameras for over 20 years and still go back to it from time to time.

Composition.... Now there's a thought

Good book. I've been slowly reading it at my bookshop, probably going to buy it soon!

I really like Scott's books as they give you the info now and useful tidbit here and there. I like that kind of style. Quick hints and recipes. Eventually down the road you'll fill in the 'why did he do that' part. But for now, just do it!
