that was one of the biggest mistakes of my life

i can offer you this advice - set it up so that you pay it off in full at the end of each month. If not then cut it up when you receive it

i want the Nikon D700 and i will be using it soley for that, i have a little one now that i pay off the minimum each month but will set it up so i actually pay off alot more than that :)

Credit cards are fine if used sensibly ;)

I try to make sure mine is never above 25% of it's limit. I have no idea why I set that %tge though, it's just something I think I decided on years ago and I have never thought any different. Of course the problem occurs when the issuer continues to increase my limit :cuckoo:

i was refused anyway, dagnammit - Oh well, i am sure i will managed without :)

Trust me, they have done you a huge favour there. :) Although I've never used a credit card, I have been through a period in my life when my borrowings got a little too hot for my taste. Thankfully I got myself out of it and only get tick on something I really really really need badly (like, I had to get a new washing machine a couple of months ago but I didn't have enough cash in my bank account to buy one outright).

Keep it in your freezer in the middle of a huge block of ice. Then you can't use it to make any sudden purchases. You will have to wait a few hours for the ice to melt first.

EDIT: Just saw the refusal bit.

Steve.

i got a letter from one of mine the other day saying basically 'you've only been paying the min amount per month, so its obvious you are struggling to pay back the debt, therefore we are raising your interest rate from 20% to 33% APR'
nice

btw, for anyone else who gets the same letter, just cancel your card and you get to keep the original interest rate.

just save till you can afford it - you may even get a D800 then! :)

OMG about the interest thing! Why have a minimum if thats what they think about it!

i have a small credit card with 500quid on it, i am going to pay it all off (probably at chrimbo) and then not bother with them again i think

i can save for my D700 and i will have the money from my student loan in about 3 weeks so i will use that i think :)

Just curious. I've only been back in the UK for a couple of months, but this has been illegal in South Africa since 2007. Banks, and other credit providers, cannot grant credit or increase your credit limit unless you request it, and are able to meet a pretty rigorous scrutiny of your monthly income, and ability to pay after meeting all your liabilities.

I have one credit card that is used for emergencies only, probably about once a year, last time was because I had left my bank card at home in the washing machine
Yet I regularly have to ring them to stop sending me endless cheques every month with the suggestion that I might like to transfer all my credit card debts to them using said cheques, which I have to destroy cos I don;t want and won;t be using.
I have rang them endless times telling them that I don;t want the damn cheques, nor do I want my credit limit increased every month when I haven't used the card:bang::bang::bang:

Student loan...isn't that for your education...:suspect:

Where the heck does £1800's worth of camera fit in with a student loan..

Forget the credit card, forget the camera, go to college and try not to end up in 25k of debt..

Exactly.

Save the debt on unnecessaries until you have got rid of your debt from the necessaries.

Try not to use it. Credit cards are trouble in my opinion. Its far too easy to buy stuff and horrible paying them off for years, long after the enjoyment of your new purchase has worn off. Try to save for your camera if thats what you want. Ask family for money towards it for Christmas and birthday. Thats how I got my first DSLR recently.

Yep and as a photography student i can use my student loan to improve my photographic equipment - thats what its for

i work bloody hard all year so i dont need to pay off all my rent in one lump sum, i can use that money to benefit myself immensely and thats what i do, unlike flitting it away on booze and rubbish like most students do...

Dont see why thats such a problem really, or what grounds you feel you have to tell me what to do or not do with my own money!

Yerp was denied the credit card, my plan was going to be simply to use it and then pay it off with the student loan in a few weeks, and then again with my next student loan at chrimbo, its okay though - i can afford the body and perhaps one lens and just build it up every three months from there :)

just being impatient i think so i definatly think it was for the best :)

Hard though, i make money from photography and if i had better equipment i would have more money from photography... so its a win-win situation getting a new camera really, it will help me finance the rest of my education :)

but its okay, i can wait :) :) *just*

Don't use mine often ... but pay I it off in full every month whatever is on it.
I hate the thought of every thing costing 30% more than it need.

I do the same. Only use one because of the consumer protection it provides.

Really interested to hear whether the Nikon eventually does allow you to earn more than your Pentax.

i dont necessarily think its something you can put a finger on yes or no, i will always be improving as a photographer - particuarly for the next few years when i am just starting out - i am not imagining that i will be flooded with new jobs as soon as i get the D700 but i will find it an awful lot easier especially in dark conditions (like in a church or night-time at a festival) to achieve an overall better quality of photography, its all about being able to repeat the standards you have set, fluke doesnt come into it

My Pentax is an entry-level DSLR where as the Nikon is a professional camera with better features and better glass. For example i find it very hard sometimes to focus the Pentax, regardless of the ISO if the light is low its near on impossible to get decent focus from it. Same for moving objects, the auto-focus (not that i ever use it) is not brilliant.

the fact is, i have outgrown my entry level DSLR and i wanted to find a professional camera, after much debating, studying and researching, i settled on Nikon

I want to begin working in Full Frame, i want to have the option at least to spend 2000 on glass and produce a picture that reflects that.

I sat look out of my window the other day which my housemate very kindly cleaned inside and out at the weekend. Looking through CLEAN glass at the dawn rising made it even more clear to my why i needed new kit. I am starting to feel like my pentax is second rate, i have produced some wicked results with it but thats all been down to my own technical ability and the work i have put it. Now its time to put that work in with a camera which can offer me more and more, not struggling to get second rate equipment to achieve these results.

Of course i will make more money with the Nikon, simply because i have only JUST began making money from my photography and i imagine i will have the Nikon for 3/4yrs before upgrading again...

I'm not telling you to do anything, its simply a common sense approach based on experience.
What you do with your money is your business.
Read advice, digest it and either use it or ignore it.

good luck..

and how is judging someone situation, based upon knowing precisely NOTHING about their situation make sense???

it doesnt... is the short answer

I work very very hard and i pay my way all through the year, i dont spend hundreds of pounds on clothes and booze and nights out - Photography is my life and i choose to spend the grant that the government have TRUSTED me with, to further my career and improve my photography.

Your reaction to my thread was inappropriate, i did read your 'advice' and i dismissed it quickly as mis-placed and mis-judged

perhaps learn to know people before you assume the worst of them, because that is not always the case

I use mine all the time, very useful to manage cash flow, gives far more protection than other cards. I would never use my debit card on line.

My reaction is inappropriate..??

Take a look in the mirror feeb

The flame crap is all yours, as usual.

i tell you what Joxby, the day you stop assuming that your opinion is so fabulous and putting your thoughts across in such a negative and belittling manner, i will take your ideas onboard - until you can sort out your ego please stop speaking to me because i will Never react well to somebody who can judge so crudely without bothering to learn the facts.

Dont worry mods i will step away from this now and place this ignorant man on ignore to boot
