This is a dilemma but a good dilemma at that.. Over the winter I was planning on visiting Europe to photograph wild golden eagles however I have also go the chance to photograph Goshawks in the wild as well. Both promise great shots of rare birds. The Goshawk has been on my wish list since I started photography and the golden eagle is just awesome and I very good opportunity to get lose to this magnificent bird.I can only manage one trip as I have other things already booked this year.So what would you do?The golden eagles are from a baited hide where the goshawks are from a secret location which a friend is visiting just now and says that he has the goshawks many many times each day along with other birds-this isn't an organised trip or from a hide.

Hi Mark, I dont know where the Goshawk is but if it is in the UK then it is easier than going oversea (Poland) to do the Goldies but hang on, I thought you went to do the goldies in December with "Lost" ??
We went and did the white tailed eagles but not the goldies...Goldies will happen but not sure if it will need to be put off till I do the Goshawks....Both are overseas.......

Lee-why the Goshawks?
Ahhh, I assumed the Goshawks were in the UK... they are formidable birds of prey... but, I rarely see photos of the Goshawks in their natural habitat...it would have been an opportunity I would have jumped at...

Yeah Lee, it has been a goal of mine for a long time now to see them and photograph them in the wild and now im getting a chance and im not sure if I will go or not.My friend has them hitting wood pigeons in front of him, he is also hand picking his shots now and is only taking flight shots--what a great position to be in....lol....

Ive just text Seb to make sure it was Berlin....his reply... Yep Berlin has a large urban Gos population. Nest on fountains, lamp posts, bus stops etc!!!! ******* mental!!!! He has also put me onto a guy that has been there...... Think Ill take workshops there :)

100 breeding pairs in Berlin but its a big place, just need the right contacts to get you in the right place at the right time.

Ive got a contact mate, he has been there and done it. His name is Sam and already on to Danny and Mark to set up workshops. Got to be a winner. Free scouting missions for me lol

I see, I am also interested on the Poland and of course count me in for the Goshawk in Berlin!! :D

Goshawks would be my favourite Mark, you can get goldies here, albeit with some difficulty.

BTW Im in the Goshawk camp. Eagles are getting photographed more and more now and they can be done in many places, but Gos are pretty unique. Good on Chas for grabbing the bull by the horns and researching it and look forward to seeing his shots.

Some shots eh Mark )))))))
Yip mate, was talking to him last night. He said it was the most difficult photography he has ever done- trying and getting a wild goshawk in flight is a great achievement. Roll on next year.he said they are few and far between and only managed 2 birds in total so it doesnt look like what you first thought.

I never thought it would be that easy Mark, it was your post that would make people think it was :) "My friend has them hitting wood pigeons in front of him, he is also hand picking his shots now and is only taking flight shots--what a great position to be in....lol..."

That made me think that you understood there were loads about in Berlin hence i said about 100 breeding pairs- berlin is a big big place.

Well as Goshawks go 100 breeding pair in one city is as high a concentration you will find any where in the world so as the species goes you can class that as common if you get what I mean. I would be 100% confident that through my contacts Id find them easy enough ;) Gos by day hookers by night lol

Here is a quote from a guy that went for the first time for only a weekend .... " I managed to find 12 territories, 16 nests and 10 different birds (some of which I saw a number of times). Some of the locations were very urban and with a little bit of luck, I should have some quite unique pictures by the end of the summer. Just seeing these fierce birds up close is an amazing experience" Id say that was straight forward enough Mark.
