I got published too.....and it was a total surprise. A mate of mine emailed me asking if I'd seen the latest issue of Trail Bike Magazine because one of my pictures of his mate falling off his bike was in there. News to me, so he emailed me a photo of the page. It was a photo I'd given to the guy who runs the RAF Enduro website so assumed he must have sent it in to advertise a forthcoming event. Was a bit peeved that he didn't ask me or give me a chance to send a better photo or atleast a hi-res one seeing as I only gave him web images, or he could have asked for a credit on my behalf, but hey I got published. Anyways I saw him last week at the event and it's the first he knew of it being publicised in the magazine and my photo being used. Turns out they lifted the image straight off the website without asking anyone. Nice eh. Anyway without further adue (sp) my un-paid, un-credited, un-expected publication.

Nice to get published... even nicer to get credit for it.... time to go on the Rant to the mag publishers methinks

Well done ... but you gotta give it retrospective claim effort as Oldgit says m8 ... they publish = they pay ...

What you got to lose ...

:p

Well done.

It really P's me off when people take images without asking. I recently had some images used on a car forum website without being asked.

When i asked them to remove the images they said that once uploaded, the images became their property and it was down to the person that uploaded them.

Rubbish! A quick letter stating copyright law and the odd threat of legal action and they were gone.

If only people would ask, i would have no problem with my images being used, infact i would find it a complement. But editors/publishers would rather nick them and try to get away with it than pay/credit someone else with the work.

Hmmm, part of me wants to but I've been asked by the site owner who is a mate not to kick up a fuss as the mag has been very supportive of the RAF races and he doesn't want to put their noses out of joint becasue he wants their continued support.

Send HIM the bill then! :D

I can understand that people enjoy seeing their work in print, and in this instance Kev, I can also understand your predicament with your friend in the middle not wanting to kick up a fuss.

However, if it were me, in order for me to take any pleasure from seeing my work published, Id have to email the magazine, and tell them that I was the photographer whose work theyd published without due credit.
I would then politely remind them that I would be available for any future events they may need covering, and are also able so supply them with further images (for credit or payment, whichever you feel comfortable with).

By not saying anything at all, I think it undermines the work of event photographers and encourages these magazines to steal other peoples images. Yes its only a picture, but its your picture and anyway, theirs is only a magazine, and you dont see them giving that away for free do you.

Phew!!! off my soap box now so ... Congrats Kev!

I would demand money. Or else! (unleash the lawyers!)
