Yes
I became interested in things strobist recently and started playing around with the onboard flash on my 7D, and a Mk1 Nissin 622 I've had for a while but not used much. What started me off was taking some shots of my daughter in her prom get up, once I moved the flash off camera and played with the power settings until I got it right I got some nice shots. I also have a 1D MkIII, and didn't realise the flash wasn't compatible until I tried to take some shots of my wife and girls in their race gear as they were leaving to do the local Race for Life. So then I bought a used 580 EXII from the forum (thanks again tman!) . After a play around I can fire both guns using the onboard flash on the 7D, but now need a means of doing so with the MkIII. Which brings me to my question. Do I get a set of Phottix Odins or spend more on a 600 Speedlite and build a system that way? The learning curve looks such that two flashes should keep me occupied for quite a while so at the moment the Phottix route looks like it does all I need, but I am open to all advice and suggestions. Thanks for reading and for any advice.

For now, stick with what you have and learn how to use it well.

2 reasons for saying this...
1. The more flashes you have, the more complicated it gets and the more likely it is that a fault with your technique will be masked by having an extra, unnecessary flash in use. If you have just the one, you can see instantly if it's in the wrong place or at the wrong power, that becomes much more difficult with 2, let alone with 3 or more.
2. Technology is improving so rapidly and prices are falling so much with competition that now is a very bad time IMO to spend money on hotshoe flashguns.

Lots of options, including Odins, but you could start by using the 580EX2 as master on the 1D3 for the Nissin. That would give you one on-camera flash (dash of fill-in?) and one remote. Then get the 580 off-camera too on an E-TTL cord (up to 10m long).

Thanks for the replies gents. I think I'll wait a good while until I have (hopefully) mastered the gear I have. The ETTL cord looks like a cost effective way of getting the flash off camera if needed with my 1D MkIII, and is something that hadn't occurred to me.

And bear in mind that just because the flash is on-camera, that doesn't necessarily mean the light has to be, eg you can use the on-camera gun to bounce off the ceiling/walls.

Check out these cords, from Syl Arena http://ocfgear.com/cords-for-canon-ettl/ They're the long ones I'd get, and also get his excellent book, Speedliter's Handbook
