I got a new sigma 150-500 today and as i was out in the garden messing about this came over. Kestrel or sparrowhawk? It was a fair distance away and i was using it hand held so the photos are heavily cropped and i know they arent great.

Cheers for your help

Phil

Peregrine 100% well spotted!

Really? I'm chuffed! Regularly see sparrow hawks flying low through the garden so didnt think it was one as it was a lot higher and there is an odd kestrel about but they look redder. Didnt know there was any peregrines locally here in Northern Ireland. Wish i had been more used to my new lens!

Many thanks

Phil

As a follow-up, I emailed the RSPB here in northern Ireland and they confirmed that peregrines are very rare here with only a few known pairs, mostly around coastal areas. My brother spotted something about 2 months ago locally that we think was also the peregrine so it may be worth keeping an eye out for it in future.

I had literally just taken my new lens out of the box and stuck it on the camera and went out into the garden to try it out when this came over, would so love a second chance at it when I'm better prepared.

Brilliant! The opposite of Sods Law. Is there a name for that, I wonder?

Its possible there may be more pairs around than the authorities would admit, though.....
