...long time no post on here, but hopefully everyone is just as helpful as when I was last kicking around :)

I was out at the Rallye Sunseeker yesterday and my 18-70 (D70 kit, ~6 years old now) broke.

The zoom mechanism is stuck between about 45mm and 24mm, it won't turn any further than that either way.

At the time I wasn't in the line of fire of kicked up gravel or anything, so I don't think it's something lodged in there, it feels more like something is caught or broken.

Is this likely to be an easy fix? Anything it's likely to be? Obviously taking it apart needs a dust free environment or i'm just going to end up filling it with dust and it'll be more useless than with it not zooming.

How much would a proper repair cost? I'm guessing it's not in any sort of warranty with Nikon, though I suppose it could be worth contacting them to see what the deal is? I have my suspicions that a repair would cost enough that I may as well just replace it with an 18-105 VR or something?

TBH, a repair with the labour cost figured in will probably end up costing more than buying a replacement used copy. We've just had a 28-135 go to repair with the same problem (to Jessops) and it's gonna cost £150, and that seems a standard cost that's been applied to a few jobs. Somewhere like Fixation maybe be able to give you a more specific quote relating to the problem, but I doubt it'd be less than £100.

My advice; take it on the chin and either claim through any insurance policy you have (providing the excess isn't more than what it would cost to buy a replacement) or just go straight out and get a replacement. :)

Interesting links, i'll have a read through those and assess my chances of successfully carrying out any sort of repair myself.

Thanks for the help guys!

...all that said, my friends new D7000 does seem a very nice bit of kit :P

On the upside, it did force me into using my other lenses, so I have some fairly interesting attempts at rally photography with a 10-20!
