my kit lens. I have now reached the point in my photography that I want to upgrade my standard kit lens. I have the Alpha A200 with the 75-300 and 18-70 kit lens but would like to take the plunge in to better lens quality. I was just wondering what does everyone recommend for a good walk a round lens which is just as good at capturing a landscape as it is a tiger at the zoo. I feel this sort of lens is the first choice for me to upgrade and then add to my equipment later on.

All advice appreciated

Dave

Tamron and sigma both do 28-300s superzooms. Even with one of those you'd still need another to get the wide end and image quality over the full range of the zoom might not be as good as having other multiple lenses.

I would say don't go for a single lens solution as an 'upgrade' - superzooms are a compromise in every area.

Pick what you prefer doing - landscape or wildlife - and upgrade based on that.

Do you do much stuff in low light, or do you want to? Of you prefer landscape and want more low light capability there is the excellent Tamron 17-50mm or if you wanted a better telephoto there are options in that area too.

I didn't think there would be good one lens solution  I really like all sorts of photography I don't really have a specialist area. I guess I would really like to get a good landscape lens first then a wildlife lens, based on that what are your recomendations on a landscape lens. Budget wise I'm not a rich man so up to £250 limit I think.

Dave,

ignoring price for the moment, there are 3 routes when upgrading from the kit lens.

The first is to replace with a 'superzoom' such as the Sony 18-250 - which gets slightly better IQ, and a lot more convenience.

The second is to simply get something similar in fl, but with significantly better IQ - so a combination such as the CZ16-80 + 70-300G would be the 'direct replacements'.

The third is to switch to 'fast' versions - Such as a 17-50 f2.8 + 70-200 f2.8 (usually 3rd party due to cost!).

You probably need to decide which of these routes you want to go down, and if you are happy with s/h.

What luck, you can pick up Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 lenses used now for under your £250 budget.

An alternative is add to your kit by looking at a superwide...

Thanks for all the replies guys, I am making a list of every thing thats mentioned so I can have a look around and hopefully try some out so please keep advice coming its always appreciated.
