Will be visiting shortly. Any interesting location suggestions in addition to the usual sights - Chain Bridge, Basilica, Castle, Parliament building, etc.?

Will have use of a car around Lake Balaton so again, anything interesting off the beaten track?

Many thanks.

If your into steam engines/trains/rolling stock etc, then the Hungarian Railway Museum might be of interest. We tried to visit back in April, arrived only to find the police were using the site as a training day - therefore closed! We caught the bus(but you can get a train also) from Budapest, about a 30 minute journey. From the gate it looked amazing:(

The Citadel on Gellert Hill, it's a bit of a climb but the view is well worth it, some of the tour buses go up there too.
Fishermans Bastion and the castle district are very nice, some good little cafes around there. Especially Ruszwurm Cukrászda.

Lots to see there - loved it.

One of the most evocative memorials I saw was one that strangely few people seemed to know about. On the Pest bank of the river between the Parliament building and the chain bridge are about 50 rows of bronze shoes as if left behind as part of the holocaust.

Also Memento Park outside the city where all the old Soviet era statues are located.

Rob & John - thanks for the suggestions.

It is almost 25 years since I last visited Budapest - and it is amazing how much East European cities have changed and developed. Neither the Shoes on the Danube memorial or Memento Park existed when I was there last - and both look very worthy of a visit. (Most of the soviet era statues had been removed and placed in storage when I was there last).

Agree that the Castle district is nice to wander - looking forward to revisiting.
