My friend took these photos and asked me to help her in photoshop to merge the portrait to the background but I failed completely and obviously don't have the technique or patience to do this.

I was wondering if someone here would be so kind as to give it a go and save the whole thing as a psd file so i can see how they did it for learning purposes.

The problem is obviously the hair which has movement as is very scattered.

The full size files can be found here...

Would really appreciatte this help from somsone...

Any chance you could load it onto the TP gallery - my work firewall won't allow access to zenfolio (or many other similar) sites?

I'm not having much luck at all!.

You need to have 3 layers.

Background
Portrait
Copy of portrait

Create a mask for the portrait layer to remove most of the hair that will overlap the background.
Set the Copy of portrait layer to use Hard Light blend mode and paint a mask that so the hair you removed in the level below blends over the top of the hair from the layer below and also the background.

To help you visualise the effect image the portrait layer is a simple square. The first mask cuts away some of the outside edge. The second mask brings it back but has soft edges so it blends in gradually.

You will get a colour shift in the hair colour with the method but that's something you could sort out after with a HSV adjustment layer, etc.

sorry pxl8 I'm not following what you mean there... im more of a visual person with instructions than just reading it.

Try having a look atthis.

Masking hair is the hardest thing to do!
