Hi,

I received my iphone 5 today and the sim card from the HTC is far to big. Im in a pay monthly plan so was wondering how would I go about this?

Would it be as simple as buying the nano sim then phoning vodafone and getting them to transfer my numer?

I'd ask Voda to send the the replacement SIM. Surprised they supplied you an iPhone 5. They were discontinued ages ago.
 
You can often cut the SIM to the correct size. Use the Internetz to find a template & get the scissors working :)

Thats what I did. I was a little worried I might balls it up, but no issues.
 
If you have a vodaphone shop nearby go in, they can normally sort one for you immediately, well EE did for me

+1 that's what EE did for me, the new sim was active within a few hours.

In terms of cutting it, I know you can cut a normal sim into a micro sim, but I didn't think you could cut them down to nano.
 
You can get sim cutters but probably less of a faff to just request a sim swap

At least nano seems to be the standard for newer phones BUT they need to accept that this is small enough!

There are rumours of a "pico" sim for the iphone 7 which is far smaller than a nano sim and will need a microscope to locate and manipulate it :)
 
I recently switched from an HTC One (micro SIM) to a Samsung S6 (nano SIM). I'm on a SIM only contract with Three. I went into the Three shop to ask about getting a new SIM and the lady there just got out a sort of clipper tool and cut it to size. Took her about 2 seconds. And of course no faffing around with changing the phone number because it was the same SIM.

Why didn't you just get the SIM card cut to size? No number to transfer, no down time.
 
When I recently bought myself a new Windows smartphone (I know, I know, just bear with me) to replace my aging Nokia N8 at the local CEX store, the first thing I asked was how I would be able to fit the old sized sim card into a smaller slot. The guy showed me what looked like a pair of nail clipper and snicked the edge off the sim card which then fitted perfectly in the new phone. It was all done in the blink of an eye.

That's really odd. I had an HTC One M7, same as you, and my new phone uses a nano SIM, same as you. In my case it was very easy to have the SIM cut to size. I wonder what was different with yours?

When you trim a micro sim down to nano size there might be some metal to trim off but the chip itself will still be fine.

Hmmmm EE did an immediate transfer for me when I bought an S6 and found my sim didn't fit, went into the shop,
they set up a new nano sim, put it into the phone and it worked straight away

Yes, that's what happened to mine. I was initially a bit surprised to see that the clipper tool the Three lady was wielding was cutting right through some of the metal contacts, but apparently that's fine.
