I wad able get a reserve and collect on an HP tablet from PC world last night - admittedly it was 50 miles away but hey worth the Trip - I have never experienced such abysmal customer service in my life - it was meant to be a gift for my wife who has just after a 52 hour labour given us the finest gift of our lives. We cant afford an ipad so this was a perfect option. I drove the 60 odd miles to Orpington and well can only say that I'd get better customer service if I was a dog in pets are us. Lawrence the store manager was mo really prepared to help - his assistant kept shaking her head at me, and guess what - they would not even help to offer me a deal on an alternative. I have wasted 4 hours last night trying to get one and 4 hours today on my final day of paternity leave ......... All I can say is avoid PC World at all costs , so I've lost time, my wife's going to be gutted as I promised her I'd got her one , oh and if you meet a guy called Lawrence who supposedly runs Orpington PC world try and teach him some customer relation skills ............(sent from my iphone o/s PC world)

I assume you mean you're too tight to buy her an iPad as you seem to have money for expensive Nikon gear for yourself......

Come on guys, proper order here. We're talking essentials versus luxuries.;)

I Appreciate all yout hilarity at my expense. I can take a good joke -:D However I have parted company with £1600 worth on lenses in a week. Money isn't exactly growing on tree's anymore. 14 day old newborns and 1 salary and all that....................................

It's a pretty sore subject after spending 4 hours driving and it's the principal that bugs me the most - 90% of those tablets bought will be resold to line a pocket - I don't have a problem with that until it costs me precios time and energy. I am greeted with "sorry sir your reservation was already taken"
A little empathy would have gone a long way..................

They're already showing up on eBay for twice the buying price.

Yep. I watched various outlets all day and apart from Argos, which refused to move from the full retail price, Amazon was 'fun' to watch. The prices went up and down but never lower than -£200 on list yet the stock kept going up. Can only assume certain sellers were buying cheap in quantity in one place and trying to sell high elsewhere.

Hope they are left with units they can't shift

This is just me but if i was driving 4hours to get something especally something that is selling like hot cakes then I would phone before leaving and make sure That it was there & I would of taken the name of the person I spoke to so that if I did get there and there was nothing I would have someone to lynch outside when the store closed.

You guys give Alex a break.

Theres no need to have a go at him, some of you might not know this but having a new kid is expensive and from what I've seen (and my wife tells me) giving birth is a pretty painful experience and if he had a way to give his wife a treat after that ordeal it would have been worth the drive and the expense as they won't be getting many treats for a while now, especially as with a newborn she won't be able to do a load of the things she used to do.

Had that have worked out for him it would have been a great gift too as she'll be sat for long periods either feeding or expressing, so don't give him a hard time he was just trying to be a good husband and I'm surprised at you guys - hes had some misfortune and you're laughing - what do you do for fun push babies out of prams?

By the way you might not have not have noticed the first part of his post where it says "Reserve and Collect", he should have had one put aside.

calm down

the guys were trying to make this thread a little bit more fun so it would help calm him down

i know what he is going through my wife was in labour for 56 or 58 hous cant remember now then she got rushed off to theatre becuase she was bleeding i know how it feels especially when you have to do all the work because my wife was laid up in bed then when she did get out of bed he was taken away from us into the childrens special baby unit this was not even a week old

on top of this my little lad 6 weeks old got menanjitus he is ok now but one thing i could of done with is a little light hearted fun like they tryed above so before you jump the gun thinking there all bad there not there trying to get his spirit up abit

he is now 4 and half months

i wish people would stop jumping and instantly think people are doing something bad

this is ones of the best forums around and some of the top 2 - 3 people on this thread are good people and care

not sure how true that is. if its anything like my ipad which i reserved and collected they dont get it out of the locked store into the collection area until you turn up maybe due to the value/easy to grab nature so i guess its easy for that stock to end up being sold?

still a flaw in the system but makes it a little more understandable as to why it happened at least.

PC world reserve & collect is a joke, my local store had 7 customers with reservations but the store only had 3 stock.

Was funny watching the "discussions" with the manager :)

(I'd already got one from CPW)

most times I have used R&C the item has been waiting for me at cussy service/tech guys desk.. thing is nowadays even when you place an actual order its not a legally binding contract you receive its a confirmation of order..

yes its crap what happened to OP but these R&C are not legally binding, I would take a guess its as innocent as the store was short staffed and all of a sudden an influx of customers looking for a bargain Touchpad and after they had sold out and store went back to normal they looked and seen umpteen people had R&C..

That's a shame to hear about Orpington PC World as I use them a lot and have had nothing but great service from them

They even went out of their way to rush an external hard drive to laptop copy for me and looked for a specific photo that was on there and emailed it to me as I had to get it to the publishers

like i say i dont know if tablets are different and require staying locked up?

thing is you dont pay for it until you collect so up until that point they can cancel your order right up to payment..

Our contract after you have ordered

Firstly, don’t panic if you make any mistakes during your order, you can correct any input errors right up until you confirm payment.

Once you’re happy everything is correct and you’ve submitted an order you’ll be given an Order Reference Number and details of the products (and/or services) you have ordered. You’ll then receive an email headed ‘Order Acknowledgement’ recognising receipt of your order. We will then send a further email headed ‘Order Confirmation’ and this is when our contract with you begins. This second email also lets you know how your products will be delivered to you. If we have to cancel all or part of your order for any reason, we will email you to let you know.

If you choose our Collect@Store service you will be given a reference number and details of your order. You will not be asked to pay until you collect the goods from your chosen store.

Because all Collect@Store sales take place in our stores, sales are subject to the normal in-store terms of sale, statutory rights and the Manager's discretion. Just take your Collect@Store print out and/or reference number with you and our store will sell you the goods at the website price or store price, whichever is cheaper.

Sometimes we have to hold our hands up and admit we have made a mistake by unintentionally publishing inaccurate information on the site (e.g. the price, description or availability of a product you have ordered). In this instance we may have to cancel your order at any time up to the point we send you the product(s), even if you have received your Order Confirmation email, and you will receive a full refund of any charges already paid.

I've had webOS phones one way or another for almost a year now, and have run both the phones I've had in dev mode to help test new patches and apps that the homebrew community have been creating. I have the main Palm/HP fansite as one of my first bookmarks on my toolbar, and have been following the Touchpad since it was first announced. I was stoked when I heard about this fire sale (not so much about HP's announcement), and tried my best to get one of these cheap touchpads. Every site I tried was either down or out of stock. Then I see some cowboy on HUKD saying he'd bought five and they were going straight on eBay.

No justice in the world, makes me sick :(

I'm back at work today, and the whole point of the bloody tablet was so my wife could do the online shop, web acess etc. However the whole affair has passed me by now I have the most beautiful daughter and wife, and i'm sure she can live w/o a tablet. Personally though - those guys that bought 5 to make a profit - GL to them, i hope they make lots of money. After all, for them all the counts is number one, eh

I know its not quite the same thing but there's loads of netbooks and light laptops on ebay that would fall into your budget ( I got an Asus One with 1 GB of Ram (expanded from 512mb) for 50 quid a few weeks back.)

so you could still get your wife an affordable way of getting net access etc

You had a lucky escape they sold them off cheap for a reason OP congrats on the baby x

Erm yeah, too much competition, too high initial price, poor marketing = poor sales. Nothing wrong with the pad itself or WebOS.

I watched the Touchpad frenzy with some interest and a tiny bit of amusement, the reactions of some people on Twitter who weren't able to obtain one were hilarious, especially given that most of them knew nothing of the device and had no interest in it until they seen it was uber-cheap.

I believe a lot of the madness was caused by people who wanted install Android, even tho Android hasn't yet been ported. Here's a suggestion for anyone who didn't manage to score a Touchpad but wants to enjoy cheap tablet-y goodness...

1) Buy a Hannspree Hannspad (10" capacitive screen, 1GHz Tegra 2 CPU, 16GB storage... last I looked around £150 on ebuyer)
2) Spend a few days getting used to exactly how poorly Hannspree have implemented Android
3) Spend half an hour learning how to reflash the ROM on the tablet
4) Go to the Slatedroid website and download/install the HannsTitan ROM (or CyanogenMod if it's been finished, unlikely for a few weeks)
5) Marvel at just how good the Hannspad hardware is once a decent version of Android has been installed

I reckon this is a big marketing ploy and HP always intended to sell it at £90 but introduced it at the £399 then implemented this 'plan' and hey-presto buying frenzy

Yeah I know very unlikely but would be a clever bit of marketing

Yes it has
But no b****r can get hold of one to see if they can get it working :D

Read about the new batch, given the short notice of the last fire sale, I can't imagine they'll last long if people have warning that they're coming.

Also would be interesting if it was just a big ploy, but I believe isuppli carried out a teardown of a 32GB model and discovered the parts cost alone was in the region of $300. I like conspiracies tho heheh :)

In other news, Amazon are intimating that they'll have a cheap tablet on the market by Xmas... given the success of the Kindle, I'd reckon they're the company most likley to clean up the tablet market and finally consign the iPad to the great tech graveyard in the sky. Where it belongs :D

According to the T3 site all remaining Touchpads will be going to the US. the EMEA region is getting diddley squat.

I have a friend who works for HP and they were offered them through the employee discount scheme so I'm hoping he's going to come good with one for me.

Insight apparently had a couple of hundred 16g models this morning, couldn't see any mention of it on site but I'm not signed up to them so..

/edit price was £149, not £90 though.

and that was + VAT .

theres lots of them on ebay currently (what a suprise ) going for about 150 quid for a 16g , or about 300 odd for 32g

I've heard a few stories about staff ignoring the reservations and just buying them for themselves. On the one hand you can't blame the staff for wanting a bargain as much as the next person but any decent store should have strict policies in place about staff taking up offers like this as otherwise no decent deals would ever reach the customer but all get snapped up by staff instead, either for themselves or to sell on at a profit.

Shop staff are low paid and get few perks, I don't grudge them early access to good deals (unless they do it to me of course! :) )
