Hello all,

It's been a very long time since I had a printer but last xmas my daughters brought me a HP printer which has now run out of ink after only a small amount of prints ( and this is the same reason I never replaced the last one) It works out that buying a b&w and a Colour cartridge cost nearly as much as the printer which when brought included two sets of cartridges. Does anyone know any cheap sources of HP printer ink or am I best just to chuck the printer and buy a new one/chuck it and give up for a few more years ? Not something I am Keen on as it's not very environmentally friendly !

Thanks all.

Don't HP have something called "instant ink" .......though I wonder how that would compare cost wise to buying ad hoc???

PS personally I abhor the disposable 'nature' of ink jets!

PPS we have two printers, the mono laser for documents and letters has to date been a best buy. I think at last count it has printed approx 45000 pages over the past 10 or so years. I print much much less than I did when working. I have used cheap toners recently but had a genuine HP one taking up cupboard space so install that one last time. It is likely to last about 2 years....and I will revert to cheap ones when it runs out.

Many printers now only come with enough ink to get it going and print a few pages.
Presumably to stop people buying a new printer every time the ink runs out.

My wife has it on her printer and for what she does it appears cheaper and equally important you never run out of ink and don't have any problems with compatibilty.

Yeah - I don't know if it really works out cheaper - I suspect it does if you accurately estimate your monthly printing. But it's really convenient. Low monthly cost and there's always a spare cartridge on the shelf whenever I need it. I guess I notice a £2 - £3 a month cost less than a £30 one off. And printers always seem to break when you just stockpiled ink :)

One word of warning, I don't know if it's true but I saw a post on the web where somebody cancelled their subscription and HP essentially bricked their printer. They couldn't use the ink that was left in it. Seems possible and somewhat fair (after all they didn't pay for the ink) but one to watch.

I think that's correct, if you cancel then you'd have to put a non-instant-ink cartridge in

A lot of inkjet printers go through cleaning cycles at startup, these waste ink. I have found that leaving my Officejet Pro 7740 printer in 'sleep' mode reduces this waste considerably.

Following a Which test review I switched to First Call inks for replacements around 3 years ago and unlike a number of alternatives in the past have found them very good. Can't comment on how accurate the colour is but they certainly work well and are quick to arrive.

That explains why it was so naff in the first place ! Printing anything other than text was also really poor ( a few airgun targets) . I haven't had a printer for years so cannot see me printing very much at all so will not using it cause it to stop working ? At this point does this mean my HP printer is communicating with HP ( that sounds like another can of worms ) it has never directly been connected to my WIFI network .
