I purchased a laptop - HP 17" screen - back in 2017, to use specifically for image editing. However, it has hardly any software (Photoshop is the main one), but from the start it is just so slow to do anything. It takes ages to boot up, updates are a nightmare, it takes ages to shutdown.
I don't want to buy another laptop, but where should I be looking to get some performance gains for this beast, because it really is woeful.
Cheers.

My wife had an HP laptop three or four years ago that was like that. There were three causes: it had a slow CPU, not enough RAM (only 4GB) and a remarkably slow HDD. I sorted out the two problems that it was possible to fix but it was still less than sparkling so it was replaced when we had a gift from my mother.

But as has been said already, we can't help without knowing what you've got.

Spec needed to help really.

If it's based on a dual core mobile chip then nothing will make it fast, however it could be made less slow by putting in an SSD as the system drive. If it will take an NVME drive then that's best, but a conventional SATA SSD will still let it boot much faster than a spinning drive.
