The first thing you have to do to have any chance of winning a photo competition is to enter it to start with

Pretty good advice. I particularly like the one about reading the rules.

In my own competition, I have so far only shortlisted 12 entries. A further (approx) 40 entries have not made it and the majority of those are because of the file size, closely followed by not meeting crop requirements.

One other good piece of advice if its a regualr competition is to see the entries which won in the previous year, especially if the judges and the theme is very similar - tastes wont change much in one year.
