How to use the Pocketwizard AC3

I have the following setup:
- Canon 1Dx
- PW Flex-TT1 master (on the camera)
- 3 x PW Flex-TT5 slaves with Speedlight EX580s

I can fire these remotely with E-TTL just fine, but if I want to adjust the balance, I need to manually set it on each speedlite individually. So, I bought the AC3 thinking I could control the balance from the top of the camera. Turn flash compensation up or down for each flash remotely. However, when I attach it to the top of the TT1 (which itself is on the camera) the flashes won't fire. If I press the "test" on the TT1 then I just get a red LED. As soon as I remove the AC3 it all works. I have tried multiple AC3 and TT1 devices.

Am I doing something wrong?
 
I can’t say anything beyond what I’ve written before re the PW Flex.

This product was amazing, it changed the world, but it was quirky and expensive, I finally got rid of mine after several weddings where a radio device consistently interfered with them at one of my local venues. One of the quirks (may be your problem) was that they could be really fussy about the order you switch everything on. It’s covered in the manual.

I swapped them for Yongnuo, which were cheaper and much easier to use and more reliable. And they then gave way to the even easier to use Godox system
 
Honestly? PW Flex's are utter pants. They are probably the only duff product that the company has designed.

Yes they broke the ground with non-OEM TTL transmission but other than that they were totally unreliable, massively expensive and had far too many points of failure.

You'd be better off with a more modern, far cheaper solution.
 
If I didn’t have them already then I’d definitely look at alternatives. I’m just hoping to get some use out of the ones I have already.

Just wondering if there’s a “trick” to getting the AC3 to work as I have the speedlites and flexes in my bag.

ChatGPT said the AC3 must be hand-held, and that it’s not compatible with the Flex devices. Good to hear some useful advice.
 
All I really wanted was the 3 remote flash levels to be controlled from the camera. I don’t want to go up into the rafters to adjust the settings during an event :)

IIRC the big problem with the initiation sequence is that the TT1 with AC3 attached needs to be powered on first, then the receivers, then the camera.

All works well… until something goes to sleep, requiring you to reboot in order. And if your receivers are genuinely in the rafters? :headbang:

Just trade them for Godox, they’re genuinely not worth the hassle. They cost me hrs of heartache at a nearby venue, and selling them genuinely improved my stress levels (and my bank balance at the time)

But here’s the manual if you want to torture yourself.
