I have the following setup:
- Canon 1Dx
- PW Flex-TT1 master (on the camera)
- 3 x PW Flex-TT5 slaves with Speedlight EX580s

I can fire these remotely with E-TTL just fine, but if I want to adjust the balance, I need to manually set it on each speedlite individually. So, I bought the AC3 thinking I could control the balance from the top of the camera. Turn flash compensation up or down for each flash remotely. However, when I attach it to the top of the TT1 (which itself is on the camera) the flashes won't fire. If I press the "test" on the TT1 then I just get a red LED. As soon as I remove the AC3 it all works. I have tried multiple AC3 and TT1 devices.

Am I doing something wrong?

I can’t say anything beyond what I’ve written before re the PW Flex.

This product was amazing, it changed the world, but it was quirky and expensive, I finally got rid of mine after several weddings where a radio device consistently interfered with them at one of my local venues. One of the quirks (may be your problem) was that they could be really fussy about the order you switch everything on. It’s covered in the manual.

I swapped them for Yongnuo, which were cheaper and much easier to use and more reliable. And they then gave way to the even easier to use Godox system

Honestly? PW Flex's are utter pants. They are probably the only duff product that the company has designed.

Yes they broke the ground with non-OEM TTL transmission but other than that they were totally unreliable, massively expensive and had far too many points of failure.

You'd be better off with a more modern, far cheaper solution.

If I didn’t have them already then I’d definitely look at alternatives. I’m just hoping to get some use out of the ones I have already.

Just wondering if there’s a “trick” to getting the AC3 to work as I have the speedlites and flexes in my bag.

I’ll give it a try, thanks.

ChatGPT said the AC3 must be hand-held, and that it’s not compatible with the Flex devices. Good to hear some useful advice.

All I really wanted was the 3 remote flash levels to be controlled from the camera. I don’t want to go up into the rafters to adjust the settings during an event :)

Thanks for returning the sanity the AI stole from me today.

IIRC the big problem with the initiation sequence is that the TT1 with AC3 attached needs to be powered on first, then the receivers, then the camera.

All works well… until something goes to sleep, requiring you to reboot in order. And if your receivers are genuinely in the rafters? :headbang:

Just trade them for Godox, they’re genuinely not worth the hassle. They cost me hrs of heartache at a nearby venue, and selling them genuinely improved my stress levels (and my bank balance at the time)

But here’s the manual if you want to torture yourself.

AI is tool, not necessarily rubbish. Here is the answer I get to the OP's question:

Good questions — you are not crazy to expect the PocketWizard AC3 to let you control flash balance with your setup (camera on Canon EOS-1D X + on‑camera Flex-TT1 + remote Flex-TT5 units + speedlights). In principle that should work. But your trouble — flashes not firing at all whenever AC3 is mounted — is a known issue in certain configurations. I outline below what’s likely going on, and what you should check next.

✅ How it’s supposed to work with AC3 + Flex‑TT1/TT5

  • The AC3 attaches on top of the on-camera Flex‑TT1 (or MiniTT1 / FlexTT5) transmitter, and “hijacks” the flash‑power/FEC control for up to three remote zones (A, B, C). PocketWizard+2wiki.pocketwizard.com+2
  • In that configuration, you set your remote Speedlights (on Flex‑TT5 receivers) to normal TTL mode (not manual / not master / not remote) and each assigned to a zone. PocketWizard+2wiki.pocketwizard.com+2
  • On the AC3, you choose for each zone either M (manual output) or A (auto/T‑TTL with FEC), then use the dials for per-zone output or compensation. wiki.pocketwizard.com+1
  • After powering up transmitter → camera → flashes/receivers in correct order, the wireless TTL triggering + zone control from camera should work. wiki.pocketwizard.com+1

So in theory your 1D X + Flex‑TT1 + AC3 + 3× Flex‑TT5 + 3× 580EX should be supported.

⚠️ Why flashes might not fire at all when AC3 is attached

Based on community reports and manufacturer documentation, this behavior can occur — especially with Canon bodies — if something in the sequence, mode-configuration or compatibility is off. Here are common causes:

  • As per the AC3 documentation: “All equipment should be turned OFF when connecting.” After mounting AC3 → then power on transmitter → camera → only then power on flashes/receivers. Failing this power‑on sequence may cause mis‑communication. PocketWizard+1
  • The first shot after attaching or powering on the system is a calibration shot when using ControlTL + Canon. This first shot may not fire remote flashes. wiki.pocketwizard.com+2wiki.pocketwizard.com+2
  • On Canon systems, using AC3 (or similar) has historically been more finicky than on Nikon, and there have been reports that certain combinations (flash models, firmware versions, or even the transmitter shoe‑detection setting) simply don’t behave reliably. wiki.pocketwizard.com+2fredmiranda.com+2
  • If a zone on AC3 is set to “0/ (Off)”, any Speedlight assigned to that zone will not trigger at all. wiki.pocketwizard.com+1
  • According to some users, certain AC3 + MiniTT1/TT1 (or early-FlexTT5) units behave “erratically” (missed triggers, sync issues, need to re‑calibrate if you change settings or wait between shots). Flickr+2Photo.net+2

Importantly: numerous forum threads report the exact issue you describe: mounting AC3 on the TT1 (on-camera) causes remote flashes not to fire — sometimes due to the TT1 “timing out” or not waking properly, even though LEDs indicate otherwise. Flickr+2fredmiranda.com+2

What to check / try next (diagnostic steps)

Since you already tried multiple AC3 and TT1 units (so it's unlikely to be a single faulty device), here are the checks and experiments I’d run — some of them repeatedly — to isolate the exact cause:

  1. Strict power‑on order: Turn everything off. Then mount AC3 → turn on transmitter (TT1) → turn on camera → wait a few seconds → turn on remote flashes → then turn on Flex‑TT5 receivers. Then test with a calibration shot, and then take a real shot.
  2. Check zones on AC3: Make sure that each remote Speedlite is assigned to a zone (A/B/C) via FlexTT5, and that the AC3 zone switch for that zone is not set to “0/ (Off)”.
  3. Remote Speedlights in correct mode: Ensure remote 580EX flashes are in their normal TTL mode — not in manual, not in master/remote mode. The AC3 expects ControlTL TTL on remote flashes. PocketWizard+1
  4. First shot as calibration: Remember first shot after AC3 attach might not fire — take a test shot deliberately (shoot e.g. at 1/160 s) then try again to see if the second shot triggers.
  5. Check sleep/standby behavior: On Canon cameras, some users report that after a period (e.g. ~10–25 s) with no shots, the TT1 (and by extension AC3) may go to a kind of standby — LED may flash but radio may not trigger until next shot wakes it. Flickr+1 Try shooting repeatedly or half‑pressing shutter to keep meter awake before next shot.
  6. Firmware & factory reset: Ensure all your PocketWizard units (TT1, TT5, AC3) have up‑to‑date firmware, and after any update do a full factory reset (“Reset B” or equivalent) per manufacturer instructions. wiki.pocketwizard.com+1
  7. Compatibility concern with Canon + FlexTT5 + AC3: According to the official PocketWizard docs, when using Canon bodies you may need the newer generation transmitter (e.g. FlexTT6) for full reliability — FlexTT5 (and older) users have reported odd behavior under some Canon bodies. wiki.pocketwizard.com+2wiki.pocketwizard.com+2
  8. Test with single remote and single flash: Try simplifying: one remote FlexTT5 + one 580EX, with AC3 on camera — and everything as above — to see if at least that fires. If it still fails, that suggests a systemic incompatibility (rather than per-flash or per-zone mis‑assignment).

‍ What I suspect in your case

Given that:

  • You said the system works fine in E‑TTL with TT1 + 3 × TT5 slaves (when AC3 is not attached).
  • As soon as you mount AC3, no flashes fire (even “test” on TT1 produces only red LED).
  • You tried multiple AC3 and TT1 devices.

This points to one of two likely root causes:

  • A compatibility issue between the older Flex‑TT1 / Flex‑TT5 + AC3 combination and your 1D X (or the Canon firmware / camera hot‑shoe detection logic). Essentially, maybe the TT1 + AC3 combo simply doesn’t reliably “wake up” / complete handshake with the 1D X’s electronics.
  • A persistent startup/order‑of‑operations mismatch — perhaps the required “power‑on top-down,– then calibration shot, then only real flash” sequence isn’t being followed strictly (or the “sleep/standby” behaviour of TT1/AC3 on Canon is interfering).

Because you tried multiple hardware units, a faulty device is less probable.

✅ What I recommend you do next

  • Double‑check power‑on sequence and do a proper test with only one remote flash + one remote Flex‑TT5, to remove variables.
  • Make sure remote flash is in TTL, zone is correct, AC3 is set to M or A (not off), and take one calibration shot then a real one.
  • If that still fails: try updating firmware on all PocketWizard units (TT1, TT5, AC3), then do a full factory reset.
  • If it still fails: consider possibility that the Flex‑TT1 / AC3 combo may not be fully compatible with your 1D X — many users recommend using the newer Flex‑TT6 with Canon bodies.
