EX580 MK II mounted on the hotshoe of 1D Mk III, but I only want to use the AF beam assist on the EX580 MK II not flash. I am then trying to use the PC sync terminal on the 1D MK III body which is connected to a RF602TX sync port. Thus use the RF-602TX to fire my strobist flashes.

If I disable the flash via the menu, I still get AF beam assist but it now disables the sync port.

Any one know if it is possible to get the sync port to fire with the hotshoe flash disabled?

Or is it gaffer tape over the flash head?

Yes it can be done. The 580EXII will be configured as the "Master" so you just need to disable the Master from firing....AF assist, preflash (if in ETTL) and slave communication will still occur.
Page 39 of the 580EXII user guide gives details of selecting Master On/Off.
