How to transfer photos to hard drive without a computer?

You'd need a device that acts as a USB host, which is usually the computer. This is a downside of the way that the USB specification works - unlike FireWire it's not a peer-to-peer standard which would allow all devices connected to the same bus to talk to each other directly.

There are some storage devices that will do this using the OTG (On-The-Go) extension to the USB 2.0 standard, which allows any compliant device to act as a USB Host, though they're often the kind of thing that will allow you to plug your media card from the camera to copy data anyway.

e.g. Nexto OTG Xpress, Vosonic VP8870

I have an earlier-generation Nexto to which I fitted a 100GB drive and it's quite handy and very fast at copying data.

A cheaper option might be to build your own with something like this OTG 2.5" external IDE drive chassis, which comes with a battery pack for a little over ten quid

Just pop in a cheap 2.5" IDE drive and it will back up files, though I reckon you'd still be better off using a dedicated USB 2.0 card reader than the camera as it will likely be faster and save the batteries on your camera.

I've not tried one, but a USB OTG Bridge should do the job for you if you literally want to plug in your flash drive on one side and the camera on the other. It's a simple USB host with a facility to copy data from one device to another.

£5 on eBay.

N.B. the last two links were random finds with Google to illustrate the point, so no specific recommendation for either the device or supplier.

If you happen to have bought a Nokia N8 phone recently, it will do USB OTG.
