I think my Netgear Router has gone kaput. Is there anyway I can test if it's a software or hardware issue. I think I've nailed it down to the router but here's the problem.

Went to use the phone last night - no dialling tone. Phone works by plugging directly into the socket in the wall. Using my PC USB modem directly into the splitter the phone & internet both work. Connect the phone cable via the router - phone doesn't work (no dial tone) & no internet. Forgot to add I'm using Windows XP

Any help much appreciated before I splash out on a new router

can you browse to the routers management page via the browser? Assuming you get your IP address from the router what happens if you go to the command prompt and type IPCONFIG - do you get a valid IP address?

I'm afraid I'm not that techie - can you put that in English please :bonk:

Step back then...... what lights are on the router is there one that confirms the broadband connection is "live" if so is it on? If its not then you have a problem...

Assuming it is.... Do you know what the routers Internal IP addess is? chances are its something like 192.168.0.1 - If you know this address if you type it in in the address bar in your browser dose it connect to a managment page?

Please explain what you mean by the above quote. Are you plugging the phone into the router?????

No that's my bad explanation - I meant the modem cable that goes into the splitter for the wall phone socket

First of all you should try replacing the filter, the bit that plugs in to the phone socket, if your phone works in the wall but doesn't when in the filter then my guess is it has gone tits up

Sorry i didn't read it correctly, so your usb modem works using the same filter???

If so have you tried the little reset button in the back of your netgear router????

I have a netgear router gathering dust if your one turns out to be dead.

I've tried changing the filter & the phone works provided the router is not connected & my USB modem works via the same filter - so I'm guessing it's not the filter

I've just checked the test light does come on when I start up

The reset button - is that the small hole on the rear ?

Hurray I'm up & working again - I don't know what happened but think I may have managed to reset.

Thanks to everyone for their help - hopefully I won't have to trouble you again
