Hi,

I'm an Architect by trade!! My practice has finished this annex extension to a daycare building. to hide the existing building we cloaked it in a large multi coloured screen - as shown.. I'm hopefully going to take some decent photos of it tomorrow evening around dusk.. I had thought about lighting it with speedlights over multiple images and combining.. but what are your thoughts on this? daytime image included for reference..

I will also take some non flash shots, but thought the flash would help make the screen pop.. just bare flash?

Normally: with a wide angle, leaving enough space around the building, and the
good idea to keystone the take in PP.

Like a pro: use a PC/ts lens, frame with no extra space, and no keystoning in PP.

Just googled it.. don't have a TS lens.. D300 with nikon 12-24mm and a D700 with 28mm f/2.8..

What's keystoning?
If the RAW converter you are using has the tool, then it will be explained in the
instructions… take the time to read them, look for keystoning.

I am in the same boat as yourself, I have been tasked with taking pictures of all our completed schemes we don't have images for. Only problem being is I only have a 18-55mm kit lens so I'm hoping I have enough angle to get some decent images.

I should be fine shorting it generally, its more the lighting of the screen I was querying.. Will have a blast tomorrow night and post the shots..

OK, went and took some shots tonight.. night fall happened all a bit too fast.. got some keepers, but will go back and take more.. the 2nd two are lit with a headlight I use for cycling over a 30sec exposure.. light flare is a bit much for , shorter exposure next time..

LOVE these, I know our practice would love it if I took this sort of image for our projects! Nice one!

As indicated above, you could try using a tripod/monopod bungie tied to a step ladder to gain a bit of height, that would help with achieving a slightly different perspective.

Good use of the screening to tie in the 2 different parts of the building (y).

ps looks like you need to clean your sensor as I can see a few dust bunnies in the fist night shot collection

Thanks, never thought about the height thing.. might go back some evening and try that.. Yeah the screen was provided to hide the old building and create a new presence for the daycare centre..

Yes I've borrowed huge stepladders to fix the tripod to and remotely triggered the camera from the ground. But sometimes there are neighbouring buildings where, if you ask nicely they let you shoot from a high up window.

Adam - your sensor needs a clean and there is no good reason to ever be shooting at f/22 as it brings out the absolute worst in the performance of the lens and the sensor. You didn't need to stop-down any more than f/11 for these shots and they'd have put you into a much better part of the lens performance envelope - essential with a kit zoom if the defects aren't to show.

Thanks Alastair.. Never knew that about the lens performance.. I was just trying for a 30sec exposure to light the screen..will get another go.. Higher up and f11.. Cheers for the comments everyone.. Been v helpful
