Hi guys

I take my pictures in RAW on my camera. I am trying to be a bit organised. I recently bought an external hard drive and I wish to save the RAW file onto this as a backup as well as my edited version.

The only way I know how to save my pictures is plugging my camera into my computer. It brings up a folder with all my pictures on my camera which are RAW. I then copy and paste it into another folder that I have created but it then saves this as JPEG? How do I save it as RAW? Many thanks.

Also, when I export my images from Lightroom 6, it exports it in JPEG. I would like to do this in RAW if possible.

I'm sorry, this makes no sense whatsoever. Cut and paste using Explorer does not change the file type.

Try using the Import module to transfer your raw files (using Move).

Why would you want to Export in raw? that's not the purpose of the Export module. What do you want to do with these raw files you're wanting to export?

When importing into lightroom there is an option to make a backup copy in an alternative location.

For existing images you will need to copy them using windows explorer.

Hi Ravinder

Firstly, do say what camera you using and also what computer operating system? The reason I ask twofold - when you say you are shooting raw but only jpegs transfer, just what are 'seeing' when looking at the camera card when attached to the computer? Is there a jpeg and another larger file that the computer shows no image for and is perhaps a .CR2 file as a Canon raw file would be? Now though you say you ate shooting raw do camera settings say RAW or perhaps RAW & jpeg

In regard to the computer, it may not natively display raw files as it may be missing the codec to do so?

Also, when I export my images from Lightroom 6, it exports it in JPEG. I would like to do this in RAW if possible.

LR export does indeed create a jpeg (or a TIFF), I copy raw files outside of LR.....simples ;)

Have got a card reader, if so try the method of transferring the card contents?

I don't think you would.

Lightroom doesn't modify RAW files. It just creates a "recipe" containing the edits you've made, and applies that recipe to the RAW data whenever you want to view the image. The Export facility bakes those edits into a permanent image, which it saves as a JPEG or a TIFF. But the RAW file is untouched. So exporting as a RAW file wouldn't make any sense.

What you can do is export the catalogue + raws, which includes the raw files and the the log of adjustments (that's the catalogue bit), that's how you can archive everything.

But yes, in order to view an image it needs to be converted to JPG or similar.
