Hi i'm using the Gimp and was wondering if there was a way to select the entire telephone wire, cut it out and stitch the two halves of the image together?

I'm trying to avoid the cloning tool as the wire runs right the way across the image and the sky in the background has a very smooth gradient.

Does Gimp have a patch tool? Thats how I would do it, 10 second edit below, you would want to spend a bit more time to blend it properly.

No worries. Lovely capture by the way. Did you use a filter for the star effect?

Thanks no filter, just stopped down to F/16 to get the sun-stars. The final image is a single raw split into 3 exposures (-1,0,+1), tonemapped in photomatix, desaturated and cross processed. That's the general direction. There was also a levels adjust, some denoising and some unsharp mask in there. and probably some contrast ;)

Try dragging a marquee tool over a line wider the than phone line just above (or below) then copy and paste and nudge it down over the wire then clean up any edges.

no patch tool for gimp unfortunately, this is where i wish i had photoshop!

Send me the original if you like and I'll try my best. I'm no expert but I'm free :) Drop me a PM and I'll let you have my email address.
