How to measure the size of picture frame required?

I'm looking to start making some frames. Using chop service then constructing the frames myself.

I'm not sure if I'm sending myself around in circles, and over complicating things but what's the easiest way to work out what frame size I'd need?

It will be mostly A3 prints and looking at say an equal 4" of mount around the photo.

So is it just a simple case of (print size + mount size = frame size required) to work out the frame size needed? Or am I missing something?

How many ways are there?

If you insist on working with inches, A3 is 11.7" x 16.5".

So with a 4" mount, one side of your frame is 4" + 11.7" + 4" = 19.7", and the other is 4" + 16.5" + 4" = 24.5".

Two quick observations though.
[1] Are you sure about A3? That's not quite the same shape as your sensor, so you'll have to crop every image slightly to fit.
[2] Are you sure about a 4" mount? That seems pretty large to me. In your frame you'll have 193 square inches of photo and 290 square inches of mount around it.

If you frame a 24 x 16 inch photo,with a 4 inch mount, your frame will need to be 32 x 24 inch,internal(glass size) measurements,check that this is the case.Some offer glass size, some exact size,some both.

It is easiest to go with glass size,allow a bit for the glass or your sanding the frame or the glass..........:thumbsdown:

I always make my own, so not sure how the chop services operate,again, check with them.

You will need a band clamp to hold the frame whilst making it up.

Thanks. This is what I imagined it to be, but wasn't sure if I was supposed to allow/deduct any room for the rabbet.

1. Yes, A3 is fine. The small amount of cropping isn't an issue for me.
2. Again I wasn't sure if I would lose an inch or anything due to some of it being hidden behind the frame as it tucks into the rabbet. If it doesn't then I will probably be looking at a 3" mount.
