it needs a better background, i can see your washing in the reflection, it needs doing in a neutral room with a plain background.

Hi

Thanks for the quick comments. what is the semi transparent box? i will try everything you throw at me as i need to improve my photoshop skills anyway. Any particular background is better than others?

thanks guys!

oh no there isn't!

10 minutes in PS using the magic wand, paintbrush, clone tool and upping the contrast a little before applying a little unsharp mask ............

any more detail in the process involved

1st off, I used the clone brush tool to remove the stand. Once done, I switched to the magic wand tool, selecting the bits not automatically chosen by holding the shift key down whilst clicking on them. Then chose a contrasting colour and used the paint brush to paint the selected area's. Deselected, then used the paint brush tool to touch in any 'dodgy bits'. Back to the clone tool and fixed relections on the body of the sax. Finally, increased the contrast a little ('Image', ' adjustments', 'Brightness and contrast') and then applied a little 'Unsharp mask' ('Filter', 'Sharpen', 'Unsharp mask')

Have a play

I think its a good photo to start with, save for the somewhat distracting reflections in the brass itself. I don't think the carpet is as much of a problem. Find an empty room and try again :)

I like the carpet for the texture. I converted the image to b&w using the channel mixer & then added the black to outline/define (I used layer masks but they are complicated for a photoshop beginner - start reading up in the tutorial section Rasmusrok ) You can achieve the same effect using a soft edged brush preset
I then used levels & curves (both found in the IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS menu in Photoshop )
Finally added a high pass sharpen.
(All of the image needs a lot more work to make the blending between the black & the saxamafone work better but this was just to give you a basic idea.)
