How to keep LR 2 edits when upgrading to LR3?

I was wondering if anyone can help. I was thinking of upgrading Lightroom 2 to LR 3 but I don't want to lose my edits from LR2.

How is this done? I am right in thinking that LR uses a 'sidecar' file that stores the edits in a non-destructive way?

I've saved all my images but how do I re-associate the images with their edits if that is not embedded with the image? What do I need to export/import to make sure that when i put the images back onto my machine, their respective edits are intact?

My machine is running horribly and is due a clean install so I'm doing a complete re-install rather than installing LR3 over LR2.

I hope this is making sense.

Just open the catalog from LR2 into LR3 (you may have to convert it - can't remember...)
 
You just open the LR 2 cat in 3. You don't lose anything. Lr3 converts the catalogue. Take a back up first just in Case. All worked for me. Very straightforward.
