Should the VR on my 70mm-300mm be working when i'm using a tripod and the infared remote?

You might find it just has trouble simply because there is so little light coming through. IR filters, as you probably know, cut out the entire visible spectrum apart from the extreme near IR.

Maybe a misread? I mean an "Infared remote control"

Not using Infared remotely. ;)

I think he means using an IR remote not a filter!!

I've no experience with VR, but thinking logically the VR should work whether your shooting hand held or on a tripod, shouldn't it?

Normally the VR kicks in with the shutter half pressed. Not able to half press with the remote.

To be honest my initial question was quite a dumb one, and was answered pretty quickly.
If its on a tripod, why would i need VR! I will just have to shelter from the wind and get a better tripod! :D

The 70-300 should have 2 VR settings. One for handheld and one for tripod use AFAIK.

No.. one is for reducing horizontal movement, and the other is for reducing both horizontal and vertical movement

Nikon recommend that VR is disabled when used on a tripod as it can produce unexpected results.
