How to get my sony HVLF43AM remote flash to work!

Hi. I am using a second hand just bought A300 with my HVLF43AM remote flash attached to the camera. I have never set up this camera or paired it with the flash but it is attached to the shoe. I have gone to FN -> Flash mode -> Selected WL (but on the main FN menu the thunderbolt is greyed out. The camera will flash in [Auto] but the attached flash does not. What am I missing here?
 
If the flash is on camera you need the camera to be set for Fill flash - WL is for wireless, when you use the cameras pop up flash to trigger an off camera flash (using optical wireless triggering).
 
Just to add: the HVL-F43AM won’t fire while mounted if the camera is set to WL mode. WL is only for optical wireless control using the pop-up flash.

Set the flash mode to Fill Flash (or Auto) and make sure the flash itself isn’t set to wireless. Once both are in normal on-camera mode, it should fire correctly.
