Edit My Images
No
Hi all, I'm doing a shoot next week of a property for a new leaflet and for a website. Now, the graphic designers have asked for the images in Raw format. Now usually when I do shoots I shoot in Raw, edit them and then they convert into jpg. I use lightroom 3.6 and photoshop. I can't seem to re-save in Raw format once i've done any editing to a shot. Am I missing something, or do I need a new bit of software?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks guys

If they are specifically requesting RAW files that suggests to me that they do not want you doing the editing they want to process the files to there own requirements, I'd suggest that you double check your brief for the assignment...you cannot specifically save a RAW file per say as far as I'm away always willing to learn on that front however when you edit a RAW and save the resulting JPEG a small data file will save with the RAW file it will have the same name but as I'm away from the computer I cannot from memory tell you the extension of it but its basically a temp data file that if kept with the RAW when you open it again the adjustments you previously made will still be as previously made...

However as I said first..I'm willing to be they want to do there own processing ;)

You can edit the file in LR or another Camera raw editor (not PS itself, but ACR is ok). When you make the changes they are saved to an .xmp file (the raw file isn't actually changed) if enabled (In LR it's "write changes to file").
You can then send the original raw file along with the xmp "sidecar" and their program *should* recognize/apply the changes.

Once it is in PS it is no longer a raw file and it cannot be saved as one. You cannot "re-save" a raw file with changes...it has to become some other form of viewable image. (technically, a raw file is not viewable).

This is it, exactly.

There is software out there which allows you to make very very minor changes to raw files. For example if the clock on your camera was set wrongly, you can fix the timestamps and re-save as raw files. (This can be a life saver if you're trying to synch the images from two cameras.) But as soon as you touch the image data, it's no longer possible to save it as a raw file and the closest you can achieve is raw+xmp.

Just take the untouched RAWs from the camera and send to the designer. They are still RAW files and can be edited by anyone with PS or whatever.

I would be inclined to send a copy of the rawfile and an edited tiff. They can then use what they like, Your edit or theirs.

Thanks so much everyone for you info. If I need to edit I will just send both files (one RAW and and TIFF) and they can decide.
Thanks again.

If you do edit them remember to send them the xmp files as well, they contain the edits, without those all they'll see is the original raw.

He's sending them the tiff as the edited option, Wayne, with a copy of the unedited RAW ...

As far as I'm aware the only software that will change and save in raw is canon DPP when using Digital Lens Optimize

You could convert the RAW file to a DNG file, and then any changes you made would be remembered as part of the file and not need an .XMP file.

You could then send the original RAW file, and a DNG file with how you would edit it.

I thought his customer wanted raw? tiff would be easier to bake the edits in but if they want unedited pics their stuck with edited tiffs.
