How to Decide: Manual Exposure or Auto Exposure?

A least that's what the guy running my photography course told us the other day

I don't understand why there is so much debate about manual and auto modes. They are all just different ways of setting the exposure. You should always end up with the same result regardless, just that some folks prefer one method of working over another.

The only fundamental difference between them is that in auto the camera can change things for you, and in manual, it won't.

If manual was called the 'Lock' mode, its primary use would be more clear.

:agree:

I use (and teach to use) AP all the time, except where 'Lock' mode is better

Lock mode - like it :)

I don't have much choice, shooting with an D60 and an old AI 50mm 1.8 lens I have to everything manually.

Camera doesn't even pick up the exposure so I have to try a couple of different shots to make sure its right. Getting pretty good now at getting it correct by the 2nd shot, sometimes first. I've had to learn a lot, and learn it fast but I think its a great way to learn, no relying on technology :)

But, if it was an action shot I would most definitely move to the 18-55mm VR lens. I don't want to miss anything.

it gets more and more complicated...i use P but employ spot metering so i can 'manually' set the exposure...my camera is just a meter...then i let the lens do some work afterwards

recently i have found the advantage of using the histogram method and 'manually' giving +/- to get things to even up in the middle..with some success
