How to blend two exposures?

Here I created two seperate exposures from 1 RAW file. 1 for sky & the other for land. Using PS Elements 5 I placed the land exposure over the sky exposure. And then using a layer mask filled black I painted away the underexposed land to reveal the lighter layer beneath.
What I' like to know is how to blend both exposures seamlessly. I'm either getting a halo above the skyline or a dark 'halo' running below the skyline like in this photo at the top of the mountain for instance.
Are there any handy tips or tricks that I should know?

You do know that if you paint with the white it brings back if you overdo where you paint the black? And if yu have your brush not at 100% it reveals things gently.. you might find it easier to get rid of the aforementioned lines.

I suppose it just takes practice. :)

Dunno if it is the right thing to do, but what i do is simply lay one picture over the other and delete parts of the one on top you don't want, don't know what all the technical names are for it, maybe it's the same as what has been said above, this was one of mine from Lady Bower reservoir.

Cheers

Lovely photo, krazy_horse, and composition.
I'm not sure if deleting is the same as painting through to the layer below.
Maybe someone can clarify this?
