Does anyone know how far the 'D' clip goes into the boss on a Manfrotto quick release plate. The clip itself looks strong enough to fasten my Q Strap to but just wondering how easily it could come out of the boss.

Not enough to fill me with confidence, I use BlackRapid straps and you can buy an alternative screw which is supposed to be more sturdy, which it certainly feels.

As above, do not use that loop under any circumstances. It is just not designed to take that load. As you identify, it will ver easily pull out of the boss as it not a continuous loop. Buy a BLack rapid T1R to replace the whole whole screw assembly and you can sleep sound at night. :)

Thanks guys, didn't know they were available. I've just ordered one, I'm glad you've recomended them because for 15 quid they don't look up to much I must say! Hope I have confidence in it when it arrives.

I attach my Q-strap to my Manfrotto plate and hang a D2x off it. The Q-strap has a swivel bit, so the likelihood of being swung around creating enough leverage to loosen the plate is very low.

The D lug at the bottom of the plate is thicker metal than the replacement BlackRapid-style bolt that I picked up on Ebay for about a fiver, and so that sits in one of the pockets of my camera bag. Or maybe it fell out, dunno, don't use it. :)

It was'nt unscrewing that was my worry Simon, it was the chance of it becoming unclipped from the boss. The RT1 does look very "diecasty" in the picture but apparenty it's stainless. Only time will tell.

I've heard of the Manfrotto handle unspringing with a camera dangling from it - £15 seems like a bargain compared to a FUBAR camera/lens!

At a guess, the Black Rapid replacement is die cast - in Stainless! (Far easier than machining and for large quantities, cheaper than sand. Could be lost wax (or to use the technical term, cire perdue))
