Just a simple 2 part question really, your editing computer, what year is it from and what platform is it?

Getting on for three years, late 2016

Windows 10, overclocked, water cooled

  • Intel Core I7-6700K Processor (4 GHz, 8 M Cache, LGA1151)
  • G.SKILL TridentZ Series F4-2800C14D-32GTZ 32GB DDR4 2800 MHz C 14 1.35 V Memory Kit
  • Nvidia Titan X Pascal
 
Mine is getting on a bit now.
I built it around 10 years ago, it's based around the Asus P8H67-V mb.
It has an Intel i5 something-or-other, and 8 gig of RAM, with a 500gb ssd, and two 1tb hdd
I run Windows 7 and my editing software is mainly Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop CS5, with occasional RawTherapee or Darktable for my raw processing, depending on mood.

Two machines

iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011), 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 with 12Gb, running macOS High Sierra
MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017), 3.1 GHz Into Core i5 with 16Gb, running macOS Mojave
 
My Laptop (PC) is from 2012 its getting dog slow now for LR and PS. Desperately needs an upgrade but is still a little power house for everything else.
 
PC custom built in 2016 running windows 10

Ancillary info - Intel i3 6100 3.7ghz, 16GB RAM, AMD RX580 8GB GPU, 256gb SSD for main drive, 64gb SSD for scratch disk
 
Two years old with the operating system on an M2 ssd and files on a 2Tb hard disk.

It is still fast enough to cope with full size files from my X T30, with only a slight slowing down compare with those from my XE2
Were I having another built, I would go with at least a six core processor. as that would help when processing pans and the like.
The latest generation i5 are faster than the older generation i7 processors. I would probably extend the ram to 32GB as files are getting larger with each generation of camera,
 
I had did a system rebuild in 2015. New motherboard in old case, kept a couple of 1Tb HDDs, kept CD/DVD writer just in case, bought SSD and RAM. Oh and bought an internal 2Tb HDD.

So Win 7 running on a Intel i5 4690 3.5 Ghz, 512Gb SSD, 16 Gb RAM, 2x 1Tb and 1x 2Tb HDDs. Does everything I need it to do. :)

Edit - Had to add a graphics card, Radeon RX 550, at the end of 2018 as I got a new monitor that didn't have a DVI socket. :rolleyes: Up until that point I was using the built in graphics on the motherboard with no problems.

Home-built with quad core 3.61Ghz, in 2012. Time flies! 20Gb RAM. SSd main drive was a good upgrade in the meantime.

Originally Windows XP, then W8 and now W10.

No reason to change anything at this point. But if something breaks, I fix (replace) it.

I'm on a custom built 2016 i7-6700 Desktop

Started with 16Gb Ram and a GTX 970 which I've upgraded to 32Gb and a GTX 1060. It hums along nicely. LR can be a bit slow with large film scans but otherwise it's fine. Computers can only get so fast! 2Tb data drive, 500Gb SSD for games and 250Gb SSD for OS & programs. I mainly play strategy & turn based games rather than FPS though.
 
7 years old, started as an i7 2700 with 8gb ram and a low-mid range graphics card, still the same build aside from swapping the cpu to the equivalent xeon after getting a donor pc and rebuilding my server with that, needed to swap the processors due to having to replace the motherboard from the donor pc and the simplest (cheapest) solution was to swap them. Still going pretty well really, replacing the system disk with a ssd would make a massive difference as it's only really startup times that are annoying, copes perfectly well with lightroom and autocad.

oh, and started with windows 7 then upgraded to 10

Hopefully this doesn’t start a mac v PC debate/argument!

It’s surprising how many of us use older computers. I guess as photographers we see the computer as a tool. We should start thinking exactly the same way about cameras/lenses!

I’m using s 2012 iMac. I’ve just added an external SSD which makes the thing shift much faster. It’s a shame I can’t easily replace the internal hard drive but an external SSD seems to do quite well as an alternative.
 
built mine in 2012 to a budget . Started out on windows 7 but upgraded nearly everything since then. lets see what did I upgrade?

from windows 7 to windows 10
Power unit from 350w to 750w
changed cooling fans to quiet running
changed cd/dvd player
new sound card
changed graphic card
from 8 gig of RAM to 16 gig of RAM
HHD "c"drive t0 SSD drive
added another HDD drive for storage on board and 2 TB extrnl HDD second backup drive

It already had several USB 2 and 3 ports which were enough

Like any desktop home built computer, , one is always, or at least I am, upgrading components,. Either because they stopped working - don't work on newer platforms or adding parts for improved performance.

it in fact 3 months spent selecting which bits to get For example I wanted a computer case that had input fans on the front and extractor fans on the back for a straight through cooling unit. Many have to extractor fans on the side slowing down air flow. Each component was chosen not necessarily the best but what the budget for that component allowed for

Therefore when I built mine every part was costed to comply with the overall budget at the time.

My initial thoughts were should I go for a pre-made one from a local shop- go to a specialist computer company that built to a spec- or build my own. It all really came down to cost and what I got for my money. Building ones own you know what is in and your not paying for build costs a company charges

Mine's a 2010 iMac (late 2009 model I believe). I've upped the RAM and recently swapped the hard drive for an SSD to try and get a couple more years out of it, because I'm too tight to buy a new one.
 
I can build them so make, upgrade and repair my own.

Frankenstein of various age parts, bought new, used or refurbished.

Always intel, Asus, Seasonic, Windows based.

Mine is a PC from PSC Specialist. The CPU is an i7 and it has 16 Gb Ram, NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 and two internal hard drives; one is 1Tb and the other 4TB. I was surprised to find I bought it November 2012 so older than I thought. It runs W10 and still seems fast enough except for running Topaz Sharpen AI.

Just replaced my 2007 Packard Bell running Vista, the power supply went and I decided that I deserved a new one. Went for HP Pavillion with W10 as I do not need a lot of processing power or super speeds and it was on offer as it is already out of date!
 
Mine is a Macbook Pro from 2014. Intel i5 with 8GB RAM and it works fine with LR & PS. I have a 1TB SSD drive via the Thunderbolt connection which helps.
 
11 year old (and a few months) and Linux. I use Rawtherappe or darktable for photo editing. Space is becoming a problem though.
I do sometimes use my wife's windows PC for panoramas but only for that.

6 months old.....a home build using an X299 motherboard with an 8 core i7-7820x and 64gb of ram running Win 10 Pro
 
My oldest functional computers are a Sony Vaio Picturebook and a Hewlett Packard Omnibook 425, both from around 1994. The oldest computers I can edit pictures on are a MacBook Pro 2006 or a Dell Inspiron 1750 from the same year running Ubuntu 18.04. I do have much newer machines but none of my kit was actually bought with picture editing in mind; that's just a nice extra. :woot:
 
IMac 21" late 2015 model which I have had for three years. Running macOS Mojave 10.14.5. Excellent system
 
My main desktop at home gave up the ghost recently (probably a PSU failure but I haven't checked)
I'm now using my son's PC (2017 & Windows 10) for routine stuff, but haven't put any photo software on it yet.
So when editing currently I'm using my old laptop (IIRC 2011, & Windows 7) which works fine for the simple edits I normally restrict myself to.
 
Built in 2011, i7 2600 with 16gb 1600 ram and 120gb ssd.


Still works fine with Win7.
 
Home built i7-2600k based box that I assembled New Year 2011, so eight and a half years. Since building it I've allowed Windows 7 to convert to 10 (pro) and doubled the RAM to 16GB. Nice 15K rpm mechanical boot disk helps keep things sprightly.

No slowdowns, no re-installs, no "cleaners" used, no defragmenting, it just keeps going. I did upgrade the original GPU I built it with to allow it to drive three screens including one in 4k.

I'm about to replace it with another homebrew machine based on an 8700k, for no other reason than "I can", which should last me at least another eight years.
