How old heron??

How old are herons? I am going to set myself a project this week of getting a pic of heron. I have searches and googled for heron areas but not been too successful, anybody able to help out, basically need someone who knows these birds well and perhaps some possible good locations to find them around the durham/teeside area. sorry the question at the top was meant to be later on!! but they look prehistoric, are they one of our oldest domestic birds?Thanx for reading.

Hi there

I have no idea how old herons are, but they absolutely fascinate me. I live in the south staffs area and there are 2 resident herons in my village. I have spent the past 2 years chasing them lol

There are 2 lakes in my village and i spend hours waiting for the perfect picture of them

Herons love canals too, so do you have any canals nearby? Good place to get them, and they seem much tamer.

I end up playing cat and mouse most of the time as they only have to see a very very tiny movement and they're gone! Best way is to seek out where they are seen most often and then go and set up in a quiet area and just wait.

cheers orchid, i have often driven along thier flight path when i spot one with one eye on its direction and the other on the bmw in front! I've heard they are very keen on frog spawn, have you heard that too? could be a good place to wait? i ove the hanging around bit just as much as the spotting them, altough up to now have never had the camera with me or wrong lens blah blah when one landed quite close by!!
