How not to set a Chinese lantern off...

Can I have the time I just wasted watching some of that clip back please?

TW@! If it's too windy outdoors to light the thing, surely common sense dictates that it's too windy to let the thing fly off safely?

IMO, the things should be banned. I know the newer plastic framed ones are supposed to be less dangerous to animals but that's still only less dangerous, not safe. Then there's the fire risk - not only to those stupid enough to light them indoors then stand downwind of them while holding onto them but also to the general countryside and houses when they land. I could also mention the wasted emergency switchboard time when drunks report them as being UFOs (usually on NYE).

Well at least it didn't drop in someone's field miles away.
Can't understand how it is legal to sell these which if used according to instructions are essentially thrown about as litter in the countryside.
Then there's from the fire risk, and risk of animals ingesting sharp fragments even from the 'safe' no wire type especially if the framework goes through silage harvesting machinery straight into the feed.

With any luck there'll be a high profile incident where one ignites a badger sanctuary which will result in immediate banning I expect.
Killing cows with agonising perforated stomachs and resultant peritonitis doesn't matter.

Agreed, and these damned helium baloons are almost as bad. Just end up as litter.

However you look at it...they're dangerous.

Years ago when camping with some friends they decided to set one off, unfortunately it didn't make it out over the beach and instead dropped into the braken on the slope/cliff leading down to the beach....

Please click - it's a video.

Took 4 fire engines to extinguish IIRC and was very lucky that it fell into wasteland and that the wind was blowing out to sea.

I'd never use one again.
