On average how much time so you guys spend in photoshop?

Being a total noob I haven't really got to grips with post processing at all, and have a bit of a play in DPP or Rawshooter Essentials to change exposure levels and that's about it.
(I use Photoshop V.6 as an expensive cropping tool)

What are the most used features, and how much of an impact difference is there? (Pref with pre-and post so I can see the differences)

Thanks

George

George, I'm at work at the mo so I haven't got the time to give you the reply I would like to (I'll try later this evening when I have more time). For now though, can I recommend you take out a subscription to Digital Photo magazine. They specialise in the post processing side of photography and every month they have a cover CD with several video tutorial. They are excellent for anyone starting out in Photoshop and also cover some of the more advanced stuff for the more experienced

Problem i find with p/s is the more you find you can do the longer you can spend doing it. I mainly use it as a tool for producing (or trying to) Black and White images but you can get carried away.

Zero

I use Picture publisher or elements :) but to answer your question, as little as possible, the tools change depending on the image but levels and sharpening are two much used ones.

I generally just use it to edit shadows and highlights in photos to give a touch more contrast to my shots. General levels and colour balance stuff. Nothing major normally.

If I'm doing a poster or something, which requires a bit more effort, I've spent over 6 hours to get layer masks right, skins how people want them etc etc.

anywhere from a few minutes to tweak levels and quick sharpen to 30mins or more for saturations, levels, layers, masks, cloning, tweaking and sharpening. However it is very rare i spend lots of time it's all image dependant, i don't like to over process stuff.

I guess the amount of time spent on an image depends and what needs doing to the image to make it how you want it too look. Most photos i take only need sharpening, contrast and curves. But some need objects, for example, cloned out.

Below are some examples of photos i have taken, before and after post processing. The photos i have chosen were the ones that really looked different after post processing.

about the same as that :)

Thanks for the replies all, nice work alexonfire, really is a difference between those "before and after" shots.

Guess I'll have to start making an effort with post processing, as most of my shots I really don't do much to....yet

tricky question to answer..

Anyone who posts a pic and says "out of the cam" I usually think, now go optimise it. That can mean anything from basic RAW tweaks to massive processing. The old argument that digital isn't real is thankfully fading out, analogue images are always processed, regardless.

Personally, it depends a lot on who the photos are for. Sometimes i will just batch convert from RAW, then batch resize sharpen for web or print.
Usually, it's all the above followed by web gallery for client or FTP transfer in low res for final selection. Once the selection is made each image will get looked at in turn and adjusted if needs be. knocked-out and put onto white background, basic curves, removal of details, etc. 10 to 30 mins / shot I'd guess.
Larger works that are processing reliant can take a good few hours to complete.

when i'm working all day.

it depends on what the image is to be used for and where, as not everyone wants the images processed the same.
i cut my time down in photoshop by having a range of actions i have specially written for each output file i need. So you can set it going and have a cup of tea while its doing its stuff.

Resize, sharpen and levels if needed.

How far you take it is your choose? I don't like to take it to far 2 minutes MAX!

Totally agree Ally.;)

I do a lot of fine art prints now, and my photoblog is essentially 1 fine art photo a day. I spend a lot of time on each image for it. Sometimes a few hours. It is kind of like painting. A little of this, some of that, undo, more of this, a bit of HDR, maybe some duotoning. Sometimes the image takes time to "develop" other times its just a case of loading it, hitting BW and done. It varies from picture to picture. I just use Photoshop as a toy. As much as I know about it, I know there still a HUUUUUGE amount left to learn, which makes me happy.

Its totally dependant on the content of each shot for me, some can be very quick... just adjusting some slight levels and sharpening... others like a rainbow panorama I did recently took me ten hours... mainly because I re-did it about three times to get what I wanted.
I treat each shot individually, using various tried and tested methods or finding alternative ways/tools to find another way to emphasise and embellish upon how I want the image to look. ...sharpening has got to be one of the most difficult processes to get right every time for every image I find…. An hour per image isn’t that unusual for me.

The more I learn about PS... The more I realise, how little I know.

Depends, if I'm processing 100 shots from a trackday I use pretty much use one set of actions to wade through them all at pace, just for the sakes of getting them onto my gallery.

If I'm making wallpapers for my site, I can spend a good 10 minutes to half an hour with all sorts of tweaks :)
