Hey!

I've got the 2013 27 inch iMac with 8GBs of RAM and even with that I've found myself coming across scenarios where my computer slows down when I'm editing RAW files sometimes.

Especially when using Colour Strokes to edit RAW files.

Just wondering how much RAM you guys have?

depends how hard i push lol i have 2gb on 1 pc and 4gb on my laptop at the moment i am using 4gb as im on my sons pc as both of mine are not working lol (24gb) oh errrrrr that must be fast

Laptop has 8G, main machine (and a few others) have 16G - the exception is a server that has 32G. 8G is going to be borderline if the program you use is memory hungry (only ever use lightroom on the laptop).

No need to go higher than 16 on my Windows machine, so far :D

What on earth is RAM, does my gramophone have it?

Not long ago had a new machine with 16 gig, up until then 4 gig in a winXP machine :)

32gb in a 2013 27inch iMac :) lovely jubbly

16gb due to need to upgrade to i5 processor and additional ram after purchasing Nikon D600.

Nobody said this photography lark would be cheap!

16gb but I can see myself purchasing a 32gb kit just for the sheer amount of multitasking that I do. Don't see the point in closing a program when I'll only have to open it again in a little while alt + shift. 16gb is keeping things smooth at the moment. But an upgrade will be due as soon as I see a flicker of delay on screen.

16GB in my W7 machine, wasn't blown away with RAW performance in Lightroom so I put an SSD in and it flies!

I've got 8gb, but noticed a massive difference in processing speed when I changed to the 64bit version of Win7.

Or rather, maybe speed not the right word. in the 32bit version PS used to hang up quite often, never does with the 64bit version.

On the 32bit OS, while you might physically have had 8GB, the computer couldn't use half of it, that's probably why the 64bit feels faster, it's using all the RAM.

Lol usually high amounts of ram is reserved for video editors but you guys go all the way

for mac ram is OWC good?
apple ram is a ripoff!

32gb + ram are you for real do you even get near that?!

No I don't really get close but the difference in price for a 16gb kit and a 32gb kit was 20 quid extra why wouldn't I lol it's nice to know u wont run out for a while.

I need to upgrade something on my machine but not sure what?

Get lots of slow down when flicking through pictures quickly on windows photo viewer, and with a few jpgs open in CS6 things can grind to a halt. Don't think RAM is an issue, got 8GB and with CS6 open with 11jpgs, Firefox, Spotify, + Chrome with a game running I still have over 3Gb free.
Processor is an i5, with the above running it sits at about 40% usage, never spiking above 80%.

Only issue I can see is the SSD is only 64Gb, and only has about 2Gb of free space. Which gets lower once CS6 is running and editing files. Occasionally, it gets too low to be able to edit files as runs out of temporary space.
Not sure if getting a bigger one, would solve all the problems? Is only 2Gb of free space, going to cause parts of the PC to run slow?

I can't vote as mine is less than 2GB, actually mine is about 256MB or thereabouts!!

Well, excuse moi for having a 15 years old computer still running with Windows 98 on about 256MB memory and an AMD K6-II clocked at roughly 400MHz!!

Guess the scratch space is on the SSD, as the available space on there decreases when extra photos are opened in PS and edited.

How do you alter where your scratch space is? Could do with testing it somewhere else to see if it improves performance.

I had 4GB but it wasn't enough to run Lightroom so I had to upgrade to 8GB

My Work PC is 16Gb RAM, I7 chip, 128Gb SSD & 500Gb SATA - works very well
Laptop 8gb, I5 chip, 256Gb SSD - also works quite nicely..

The biggest performance gain you can currently make is to install an SSD...

4 Gb here and do get to experience the "not enough memory, please close other programs" message when I work on a scanned TIFF file of a cartoon drawing.
For now I have solved the issue by scanning the file (which is saved as a TIFF format in the first place) at a reduced DPI (400 instead of 800) as well as using the MSCONFIG feature to prevent too many programs from starting themselves up upon booting up.
But it does go to show how RAM technology like to keep rendering itself obsolete a bit too quickly! It doesn't seem to be that long ago when the upgrade from 64 mb to 128 mb in my first PC was "the envy of my friends".

PS: The reson why I do work with TIFF rather than BITMAP is that it's compatible with Lightroom as well as my usual paint program, JPEG isn't very good for trying to flood fill in solid objects because the artifacts then shows up.

Sadly, the PC's motherboard can only support 4 Gb max so I've taken this PC as far as I can, does have a budget 2 Gb graphics card if that of any good to anyone?

I've actually discovered I have 3gb because of this thread (which was a shock!) and my pc will only accept max 4gb. However I ran the task manager and even with a few programs running I have around 800mb free. Would I benefit from adding the extra 1mb by replacing the 1gb with a 2gb do you think?

What OS are you running? If a 32bit one, I wouldn't bother as you only get to see ~3.2G if you have 4G or more installed.
