Hi guys!

I have been contacted by a local horse magazine that publish show results etc. and have asked how much I would sell some of my photos to them, for them to then publish in the mag each month.

The quantity they would want could vary from a few to up to 10 or more, depending on how big the show is, and how many pages it covers in their mag.

What do I charge? He has already been asking if I am going to certain shows, and wants some pictures from a show I went to over the Easter weekend.

Help! I don't want to be too keenly priced, but don't want to price myself out of the market??

Thanks

Lx

What is the circulation of the magazine and it's likely profit margin, if a small enterprise then price accordingly. There is of course the added benefit that if local it may produce more sales to owners so perhaps think of it as an advertising venture.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply so far. The magazine is the main one anyone in the know would buy if they wanted to see results and other show dates etc. It really the only one in the area really.
It is also seen as quite an achievement if a competitor makes it into the mag, especially the front cover!
Its not the sort of mag you would find in WH Smiths, its something you would only be able to buy in tack shops/stables or have a subscription for.

My name will be placed next to each photo, so people will know who took them etc.

I have no idea what I would pay if it was me?? £10-£20 per photo??

10-£20 per photo?? Just a bit on the cheap side in my opinion.
£50 per photograph would be more like it.

That's why I asked you knowledgeable people! Thanks for the advice Dave P :)

An established magazine will have a budget for freelance work. Just ask what their standard rate is.

But if I do this, they could say they pay the other photographers X amount, and how would I know if this is true or not?

Because they are professional people? Why would they lie?

From the answers above?

TBH, they're used to people who've never sold photo's before, and the usual outcome is they'll pay you their standard rate. However - in many parts of the industry the new standard rate is 'we'll give you a photo credit':cuckoo:.

That's a hundred times more likely than them trying to give you 10% or 50% of a usual £100 fee.
