Yes
Just starting in wedding and event photography, starting a company with 2 other photographers.

Just wondering how many photos wedding photographers take on average per wedding?

I was thinking of 1,000 per wedding (500 per photographer) but odviously depends on the size of it.

Just keep taking photos until you are finished for the day/evening!

We used to take between 300-500 each (2 of us) which doesn't seem alot but when it came to processing them it would take along time. (before Lightroom!)

Now that I use Lightroom the amount the photos is really not an issue. I can very quickly filter through photos and grade them. About an hour or two to filter out the good ones and then individual processing on those.

I take around 200-300 at a full day wedding....but I don't just snap away as much as I used to. I know how I process so I think much more about the images.

I wouldn't worry about the total number of shots as it will vary from one wedding to the next. Just make sure you've covered all the shots the couple want (plan a shooting list with them and a rough schedule) and shoot each one 2 or 3 times then you can just cover the rest of the day as it unfolds shooting as situations and moments arise. Sometimes it will be non-stop, other times it will seem to drag on as nothing much is happening :(

pixl8 - Yeah we will have several meetings before the event to ensure they get all the shots they want.

We've not even started yet, i'm in the middle of building our website :D

if it helps I took 514 at a wedding two weeks ago...

It really depends on the length of the Wedding and how many hours you are there. I have taken just over 200 at an intimate Wedding and the most was 817 for a Wedding which started at 11:00 and finished at 10pm.

What I will suggest to you is, take enough time to think about each shot before pressing the shutter. With practice, this can be done quite quickly. As if you just keep snapping away, like I did when I first started, you will end up with '000's of images, but not necessarily those 'wow' shots. Be alert and camera ready. HTH

Echo!
Tops for me was a wedding from 10am until 2am the following morning, so the entire day, preparations, and all proceedings: 1,100 exposures.
Took 2 days to weed down to 100 shots, edit into an album, and a slideshow and prepare 12 big prints.
But I've also come away with less than 100 exposures from very intimate affairs, consisting of the ceremony with a half dozen guests, and a small dinner party.

I took ~400 at my cousins wedding, it's better to take too many than too few, memory is cheap these days so why not.

It's a lot of work to process a many pics, but as said before Lightroom, Picasa et al allow you to sort through pics very quickly and and narrow down the "best" ones.

Between the two of us I think it was about 1100, that was at the evening do also.

Averaging 300-500. Much really depends on the characters amongst the guests.

Yeah I always take shots 2 at a time when taking photos of people. Always.

If it's a particularly large group I take 3...more likely that someone will have their eyes shut.

I find that its client dependent. Clients that ask me for 500 photographs are passed on to other photographers, I am not interested in being hired as a click click snap snap. The packages I provide are based on the number of images provided in the final product. Always quality over quantity. To me, providing the clients with a 20 page wedding album with 30 quality "wow" shots is far more important than giving them a CD with 470 mediocre photographs and 30 wow photographs. Amalgamating an entire day including candids / props / accessories / etc into such a small amount of photographs is hard work but very very rewarding.

Though behind the scenes, I would guess that approx 250 photographs are taken in total. Though many of these are doubles, just in case some smart arse pulls face or somebody blinks by mistake.

yup. agree there. our final package prices are also based on type of album and number of shots in album. the max we offer is 85 images.
and my other half IS REALY PICKY about what makes it through to the proofs.having said that. yesterdays proofs are still numbering about 400 at the mo.
we have offered cd,s as an extra. but only the proof pics get onto that.and at a price.
we were talking to a venue organiser at yesterdays wedding shoot.
theres a guy turns up to shoot , on a scooter.
maybe takes 250 shots of the day.
then just hands over 250 unedited, untouched prints, unmounted , in a carrier bag.

I assisted at a wedding yesterday, and took just over 300 images...

We have a local 'Pro' (he is a pro in the true sense, but I use the term loosely for the quality of his work) - his packages...

24 taken, to put 15 in an album; or

36 taken to put 30 in an album

Yep - he shoots on just ONE 35mm film PER WEDDING - and clearly assumes a fantastic hit-rate

Just out of interest DD, how much does he charge for those packages?!

Oh, and that really amazes me... considering yesterdays wedding couple had a request for 38 different group photo's....!

Crikey one 36film. He is either amazing or lucky

He's a complete Pillock TBH - how much ?

Advertises as "Weddings from £45"

But means... per page

So the 1 film shoot for 15 used images is still 15 x £45

Which is a far bit for sod all really isn't it

Targets the poorer end of the market with the idea that they can't be expecting much at the price ! Not very fair really is it

Disgusting even - methinks
