How many mps for good A3 prints?

I was told I could get A3 prints from my old 20D (never tried it though) so I guess 8.
 
You can easily produce an A3 print with 4mp and greater

Here's my guess -

Printing at 300 pixels per inch, A3 is 11.69 x 16.54 inches which is therefore 3507 x 4962 pixes means you need a 17 Megapixels for full 300ppi printing.

However if you print at 192 pixels per inch you only need 7 megapixels.

For most uses, 192 ppi should be enough.

Or am I talking rubbish? :thinking:

You can produce an A3 print with 1mp - doesn't mean it'll look any good though :)

Your sensor size has a bearing on print size aswell so with a crop sensor and less than 12mp you will need to make sure the picture is super sharp to begin with if you want it printed at A3
 
8 easy, 4 at a push...
so basically a 20D is fine, and so would a 1D ...
 
Good grief! I used to do A3 with my Olympus c2100uz 2mp camera.. bit of interpolo whatsit software... even got 3rd place at local camera club...with this (mascot grand national 2003).. and the judges always took print quality into consideration.

We have smashing 2 foot by 3 foot prints at 2500 iso from a D3, any 8mp or above with a half decent lens should be able to produce a good A3 if it's shot properly and sharp. Wayne
 
Exactly Kipax, although i didnt use interpolation.
I also entered a club competition not far from you and all three came first in separate comps.
How did we manage before we had all these pixels. :D

edit... why waste your time printing an A3 if its not sharp :shake:
 
Have to admit I started at about 1mp with a kodak digital.. the uzi as above was my first serious.. But a perrfectly exposed good sharp pic would print to all manner of sizes.. Even a late starter like me laughs when its said mega pixels are needed :)

My Dad took me to Accy as a kid,he had a brother lived there.......................all I can remember is a lot of bl##dy hills with handrails at the side of the pavement to help you up.............Bl##dy fit people in Accy............:lol:
 
For college show last year I did a number of A2 prints from a 5Mb machine and they looked fine.
 
A1 print off a mate of mine's D70s some time back, untouched and pin-sharp, even when viewed close.

That is only 6 Mp BTW;)
 
When I first 'went for it' at our camera club I had a top Pro D100 (6mp)

I bought a Canon i9950 A3 printer - and won POTY on the back of them both

Biggest I got to was 30x40" with some interpolation and at just 150 dpi (if I remember correctly) - client was delighted with the result (which I remember well as I've since shot them again and done their Wedding!)

Now having 12mp (D2Xs & D300) I feel I have enough, more than enough usually, and it allows for some significant crops if needed

I've had prints at bigger than A2 from 8mp and they look stunning:)
 
I'm selling 4 foot square shots from 8mpx... you don't stand up close but still, quality is ok :)
 
Assuming that you're looking at prints from a sensible distance - the usual rule of thumb is that you don't want/need to be closer than a distance equal to the diagonal of the picture - then you can print any size you like with only 6 MP.

This might sound counter-intuitive, but it isn't really. The larger the print, the further away you need to stand in order to see it properly, and therefore the lower resolution you can get away with.
 
I have a picture printed on canvas on my living room wall, shot from my 20D, cropped and printed to 17" tall by 55" wide, it looks awesome. Pixelation is not noticeable as you stand a meter away due to my sofa being infront of it. Had many many compliments and requests for copies too.
