I have just read in my local paper, the Newcastle Evening Chronicle, of the theft of the brass name plaques from a war memorial.
The memorial, in Wallsend, was a tribute to the men of the Swan Hunter Shipyard who gave their lives in the first and second world wars. These men volunteered and gave their lives for the sake of the Nation, they did not have to go to war as they were in a "reserved occupation" but these brave men decided to go and fight for their country.
And now some pond life comes along and rips the memory of these brave men from the memorial just for the scrap value.
The sad thing is there is no known record of their names anywhere so they can not be replaced.
I am totally and utterly disgusted at this selfish callous act.
