How is this done?...... Pls

This isn't my photo, but I would like to know how this is done?

Is it post processing? or is it a black bit of card etc behind the flower. Not sure because the flower looks as if it could be lit, and if that was the case I am unsure how the black background whatever it is hasn't suffered any light bleed.

Anyone any ideas.

It's a black background and very directional lighting.

If you light from an angle you can help to avoid spill, the other way is to do something called flagging which in tog terms means putting something beside the light to stop it going in an unwanted direction. Like those barn doors you see in the movies.

people stick all sorts of things on lights to get them to do that, black bits of card with velcro, drinking straws taped together............ it's a whole world of Blue Peter magic

I would guess at a black background and some form of light sharp right, maybe flash or maybe just natural light from a window, easy enough with a still subject where you can lower shutter speeds if needs be. Also a fairly wide aperture to get the shallow depth of field. That would be my guess anyway.

Yep, that's the trick - have the background a good distance away, if you use a dark room you don't even need a black card, the difference in exposure between the subject and the background light levels will be enough.
